Are there many issues with apps and the screen size/hardware across Android phones, and particularly what apps are 'proven' to be good fits for the Captivate? I don't have much time or patience for trial and error and would like to avoid some pain. A few games, ereader, and necessary utilities are what I'm looking of r really.

I believe the screen resolution on the captivate is 800 x 480. This is similar to other Android headsets on the market. I wouldn't worry about apps not being compatible with your devices. If the developer created the properly through best practices then you should not have to worry about diff screen size, especially when WVGA has been done on Android before. As for apps breaking down because of hw issues, I wouldn't worry about that either. There may be a few apps that break down bc of changes in hardware but its not a big issue. The only app that I remember that failed when going from Droid to Incredible was the flashlight app. Basically the INC was built so that access to the LED flash would only be available through the camera. It was the only app that didn't work for me due to hardware constraints/changes.

Games
Asphalt5 - I've seen the video review of the benchmarks of captivate. In this instance the game runs best on the captivate, best gpu on Android device. Heres the link below

Gaming should not be an issue as the Galaxy S(captivate) was made for gaming. I believe all games should work properly for the Captivate and they should work extremely well. Not much of a gamer so I cant recommend more titles but stick to most popular 3d ones. You will be amazed by the Screen's/GPU's performance.

ereader
I'd give Kindle for Android a check. Also if that doesn't suit your needs try alkido or another ereader. There are many available. Find one that best suits your needs. I know you don't want to go through trial and error, but we can't make suggestions for you forever. At some point you will have to be adventurous and try an app on your own. When there are 5-7 diff twitter apps or other apps that provide similar functionality , it comes down to one's own preference.

What kind of utilities are you looking for? There is a whole lot of them.
