Car Charging Question

My car is equipped with MirrorLink and all of my apps work while in motion. So I want to use a nav app but it drains the battery faster than my car's USB can provide. I was thinking of buying this which is Qualcomm quick charge approved

.

However, the red USB is charge only with no data transfer. I understand that I need data to tell the charger that my phone is quick charge capable. Correct? And I would guess that I would also need data for my phone to MirrorLink with my car? If that's the case, I guess I could just use an external battery charger instead of the 12V one. That brings me to the question is if I could safely be giving my phone 2 power sources (the car USB and the external battery or 12V charger). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

1) A Qualcom charger will have one plug. Most of them do charging only, not data.

2) Don't use 2 power sources together - not just in a cellphone, in any electronic application. there are ways of doing it (the entire US power grid is an example - thousands of generators connected together), but just connecting 2 sources together isn't the way. One or the other will be damaged.

That's what I figured. So there's no way to charge my phone at a reasonable rate while using MirrorLink?

You should be using your car charger. The fact that you're using your external battery means your car charger is too weak.

I know. That's why I was asking the original question. My "car charger" is just a USB port that I have to plug into for MirrorLink.

Ahh!
That explains it. The car's not giving you enough power. That's strange, though.
Do you know how much power it's supposed to supply?

I'm not sure probably 0.5 to 1A. It's a USB meant for connecting to the head unit with "charging" as a bonus. That's why I wanted to see if I could safely add a second power source so that I can at least maintain my charge while using my phone for navigation.

Yep, those ordeals there are usually 0.8A output... Max :/

I have Note 3, and car charger that is capable of doing 2.0A and 2.1A. Is it safe to charge it on 2.1A?
