Car mounts for Photon

Has anyone tried the Arkon "friction style" car mount with the Photon? Can you charge the phone? Does it hold it securely?

My car is too old to plug a cell phone into to sound system, so I'm just looking for something to hold the phone in place where I can see it and use it as a GPS device, or possibly as a hands-free cell phone. Also, we have two cars, and my husband and I both use both of them, so it's handy to be able to move the mount from car to car, and not permanently install it in one or the other car. So I'm really not interested in the custom photon mount.

Thanks

Gawd those are so ugly! I used to use one similar for my dash gps unit and it worked "ok" but haven't thought of trying one for my Photon. Didn't stay put when turning hard and my dash top wasn't the best for the design.

If there's one thing I really miss from webOS its the touchstone. I had one attached to a generic mount the magnets were strong enough to hold the phone and simultaneously charge it. It was pretty awesome. I hope that guy working on the touchstone mod for this phone gets it working.

I'd just buy the Moto car dock. It supplies power, is window-mounted and relatively easy to move from one vehicle to another, and of course fits the phone perfectly. And, the car dock app is nice, and supports up to four selectable apps.

Funny. I have one for my old stand-alone gps unit and think out works really well. Thus my interest.

(the one I have is less ugly than this one appears to be, but that hadn't occurred to me.)

What window does it mount on? Isn't it illegal to mount to the windshield in some states? How does it stick?

No doubt it fits this phone, but I bet it won't fit my next phone. ;-)

I'm waiting for the price to come down from 2/3 the price I paid for the phone.

And if I'm honest I'm also waiting for the 30 days to end. I'm not sure I'm keeping this phone.

I bought on launch day. I decided to keep the phone last week. I admit, I felt better about that decision when the fix for "no sound on phone" was available.

I got the Motorola Nav dock today for the Photon. It comes with a suction windshield mount. But I found out the ball-hinge socket for it fits directly onto the Garmin friction mount (beanbag) that I used for my old Garmin GPS, so now I have a Photon dock that stays on my dashboard. I prefer this over the windshield mount as I travel a lot and rent cars. Some states don't allow windshield mounts.

Note that the official Photon car dock comes with a self-adhesive plastic disk you can stick anywhere (on your dash, on your console, etc.) to provide a surface for the mount's suction cup. You don't have to stick it on the windshield if you don't want to or can't.

Do you know if you can get two or more plastic disks, so you can move it from car to car?

Is your Garmin mount this one?

Amazon.com: Garmin Friction Mount: Automotive

I'm tempted to get it and the Photon dock. Pricey, but more flexible than the suction cup and less ugly than some of the beanbags, and, I'd get to use the dock features.
