CDMA/4G and call waiting

Has anyone tried managing 2 calls on 4G?

I know on 3G CDMA with EVDO that it was limited if you had two calls, you had no choice but to end both instead of picking which call you wanted to hang up.

I thought since 4G allows simultaneous voice and data now, has call waiting also been "upgraded" to allow management of two calls?

No voice is sent over 4G, only data so all voice features will remain the same.

Voice on 4G will be VOIP (voice over IP). That's still a totally different thing than current voice technology, which is completely separate from the high speed data channels.

That doesn't make sense, or at the very best is an incomplete answer.

4G refers to overall network, voice and data included.

But the phone would have to be set up to send voice transmission over the 4G radio AND the network would have to be configured to receive and process voice transmissions at the 4G towers. That is nto currently the case.

Initially, when Sprint began 4G for phones, they said you'd be able to use it for both voice and data. Here's the AC article for it http://www.androidcentral.com/demo-simultaneous-voice-and-data-sprint-evo-4g Right around the time the Evo was launched and reviewers stated you can't, Sprint said they are "testing" using 4G for voice and data.

The way that I understand it is that with 4G, data is sent over the 4G radio and voice is still sent over the 3G radio (possibly @ 1xrtt). So this can give you voice and data at the same time (since it's using a different radio for each), but does not change anything about how CDMA has handled call waiting, because the voice service itself is still exactly the same. Make sense?

I'm just reading what's out there for news.

Sprint EVO 4G won’t do simultaneous voice-data | Android Community

"The full quote from HTC:

“If you’re using 4G for data, you can’t use CDMA for voice. Currently the only way to do simultaneous voice and data would be through a third-party VOIP solution. However, this is not due to strict hardware limitations, so it’s possible this could change with future updates."

"Update: They (Sprint) are still testing 4G and it may be possible with the 4G connection."

The way the network is currently configured, voice data is sent over 1x using the CDMA radio while data is sent via the 4G WiMAX radio if it is turned on and you are in a 4G area, otherwise the 3G CDMA radio.

So no, 4G does not refer to the voice and data network, only data can be sent over 4G at this time.

Check out the date of that story: March. Since then, Sprint and HTC completed testing, and there were more recent stories saying as much.

I just turned on 4G (I get a weak signal at work), called my desk from the EVO, and while connected I was able to surf to multiple web sites and still hear my own voice in either phone.

Simultaneous voice and data DOES work with 4G.
