Data plans cover any data that is downloaded or uploaded over the web using the wireless provider's mobile network (i.e., 4G or 3G). When you're surfing the web, you're constantly downloading and uploading data. If you stream music or movies, that uses a ton of data. If you're updating your status on Facebook, that uses data. Basically anything you do that connects you to anything else will use data except phone calls and texting, which are covered by those parts of your monthly plan. Keep in mind that sending pictures or videos via text messaging will also use up data, because this kind of media has to be sent over mobile data, not the cellular phone network.

If you have access to wi-fi, then you can access the web without using the wireless provider's mobile network, so it's usually a good idea to use wi-fi when you can.

Since it's uncommon now (or really expensive) to get an unlimited data plan, you need to estimate how much data you use in a month to decide what level of plan to get. And when you have the phone, you'll want to keep an eye on how much data you're using, because if you go over, it can be fairly expensive.
