cellular turned off / no data contract only pair via BT

I am thinking about purchasing this watch through ATT yet have no plans of using cellular data though I would pair the watch with my Nexus 5X via BT. With that in mind would the watch show incoming notifications i.e text's, email, and phone calls.
From what I have read here in the forum, is if I purchase the watch I have to purchase a data plan, then I can cancel it.
My Nexus 5X is on Verizon, but I would like to purchase the watch from ATT and save some money. Will this work?

Just tell them you want to pay full price and give it as a gift. Tell them the person you are giving it to has ATT. No problems. That's exactly what I did.

I tried that (give as a gift) at 3 ATT locations and none were willing to sell w/o a contract....

I checked with all my local ATT store no one had the watch in stock so I ordered one online from the ATT store.
I did the online chat and said the watch was a gift and that when I receive the watch call into customer service and cancel the data plan. Hope it works.
How do I get a Truphone sim card for the phone? or do I even need one if I am only going to be using the watched paired via BT again all I really want on the watch is to receive notifications from my phone which Is a Nexus 5X

You don't need to activate anything if all you intend to do is using BT. The cellular is there in case you want to use it remotely from your phone. In that case, you will need a working SIM card with a plan so that it can connect via data connection.

You can buy a truphone sim from their website. I just ordered one today. I currently have no cell service on my AT&T watch and it works perfectly fine with my Verizon S7 edge. Just has to either be connected by Bluetooth or wifi.

Wow, I had no issue going into a store and walking out at full price without a contract. Those stores are just being A-holes.

It is always YMMV. Stores get no incentive sell you a watch without a service plan. This is true for phone as well.

Thanks for all the help. So, when I get my phone, I assume there will be a ATT sim card installed, if I want to get one from truphone what type of sim do I order? Micro or Nano Sim..

What services would I be missing out on if I decide just to connect my watch via BT to my Nexus 5 which is on Verizon besides being able to make calls on the watch?
