Changed antivirus software and got a performance bump

Don't know if this will help anyone else but I've felt my TBolt has had more lag than I expected since ICS was installed.

I've been using EMS ESEC Security as my antivirus/anti-malware from the beginning on my phone. I accepted the occasional interruptions that went along with it as it did its job. I did not suspect how inefficient it was until yesterday.

For some reason the app got glitchy on me and kept force closing and restarting. I decided to uninstall/reinstall it at which point I realized I was going to have to pay for it. (I originally got it free for a thing I signed up for but that registration code will no longer work).

So I decided to switch to the free AVG antivirus app.

Wow. My phone is so much faster and more responsive with this app compared to EMS which I now think was interfering with a lot of processes as I used the phone. I mean really noticeably different. When I update or install something AVG will scan it more quickly and doesn't cause the phone to literally lock up while it does it.

Just thought I'd throw this out there for general consumption. Even a decent app that is doing what it is supposed to can still be causing more of a performance hit than necessary to get the job done. ICS is now running a lot better and smoother with just this one change. YMMV

Unless your doing questionable things on your phone, you do NOT need a anti virus app. If you download your apps from google play or amazon you do NOT need one. People only get viruses and malware when they visit very questionable sites, click links from people they do not know, or use pirated apps. You are a lot safer on Android than on a PC. Your phone would run a lot better without AVG or any anti virus app.

I respectfully disagree. I have participated in software Beta tests which required sideloading an apk. And if you think Google is 100% malware free you are deluding yourself. Better safe than sorry.

Your insinuation that I'm "pirating" software is unfounded and somewhat insulting. My device is not even rooted.

First off I didn't mean to insult you. Its just that almost all malware is found in pirated apps. You don't need a scanner to side load apps, unless you don't really know who made the app. If you trust the author of the app you shouldn't need one. Of course Google Play has had some bad apps in it, so has apples. But again it comes down to knowing who makes the app. I've used android since 09 and haven't had an issue.
