Changing background picture messaging app

i had a replacement samsung s3. on my old one i had a photo of my kids at the beach as background photo on my stock messaging app. when i change the background on my new phone i can use the photo but it is dark and like shaded out????? why? and how do i change this? my software version is the sam and its the same phone and same photo so i don't understand what to do
