Changing my phone, what do I do with SD Card Apps?

Ok so I'm changing my phone from Moto G (2014) to another Android phone. I know that when I get the new phone and log in using my Google account, the Play Store will automatically initiate download of the apps but what happens to the apps that I had transferred to my SD Card? Do I have to format the SD Card? Also, does it matter if the new android phone I'm switching to runs on KitKat or Lollipop?
