Charging Battery with car charger (DC)

I was told by a cellphone company rep, that charging you battery with the car charger should be a absolute last resort. He said that using the car charger (DC) destroys battery life. Opinions please.

He's FOS, esp. with today's Mini/Micro USB cables. It's 5V in, and regulated by the phone and the battery; there's very little difference between that and a wall-power charger (and then, mostly 500 mA vs 1Amp which only means it charges more slowly).
