Charging quirk

So as it says, I have had a charging quirk. To be more specific, I use the 3500 battery and even worse I use the kyocera echo charger since I bought this phone off craigslist and it didn't come with the original charger. So I plug it in, and attempt to unlock, doesn't even recognize my finger, I tried all 10. Unplug, unlock, lock, plug in, unlock. That's the process I had to go through to use it and then let it charge. Never seen that before. Why does this occur?
