Hello All,

I'm having an issue charging my S4 in my car. It's very slow.

The charger is rated at 2.4A and plugs into a cigarette lighter type socket.

I checked the status of charging by looking at the battery settings and it's registering AC charging so I don't know why it's not charging as quick as when I use a wall plug.

Although I'm using a generic usb cable and it's registering AC charging can that be the culprit?

It SHOULDN'T, but sometimes the quality of the cable may result in a loss of power throughout the cable. Also, make sure your charger is, indeed, generating a 2.4A Output (frankly, I've rarely seen such specs for a car charger; they're usually 500mA, which would explain the slow charge). This would be a far stretch but also make sure the power outlet in your car actually supports the 2A. Some cars have two outlets, and some of them (rare cases, but it might be your case) limit the output on the dashboard outlet since that's meant for 'lightweight' loads.

Thanks. I'll do some further testing.

The socket is actually in the arm rest which I assume is for accessories like phones and other music devices. I'll try and compare it to the actual cigarette lighter socket.

Also be aware that there are many car chargers on the market (mostly off-brand) that advertise 2A output, but are just 500ma. I went through this with finding a charger that could charge my PS Vita. It will not charge unless it detects input above 1.5A. I ended up getting the official Sony car charger after numerous failures. Additionally, I got a dual port battery pack with reviews that it's ports were indeed 1A and 2A. If the other lighter socket doesn't help, might want to give the charger a dirty look.

Ok so did some quick tests using the Galaxy Charging Current Lite app.

So with the car charger and generic usb cable it was registering 300mA...yikes!! No wonder it was slow a.s.s. Tested out the original Samung and an HTC usb cable and both showed 1200mA. Therefore the generic cable is the culprit even though it was showing AC charging something's hindering the charging at full speed.

Is there anyway to know what a good usb cable to use for charging other than testing it?
