Since there are no lights on the 10.1 2014.... if it is off how do I know when it is charged??

I think if you tap the home button it will briefly display the battery status even while off.

There is no home button when the device is off. If you hit the power button it will display a battery icon that shows how much charge is in the battery and that it is charging. Holding the power button will boot the device up. I think the same setup is on all android devices, at least all the ones that I have owned.

Just press the power button while the charger is plugged in and the Note is off and you will see the charge status on the screen.
