[Chatter] "Where everybody knows your name ..."

Well, I've had my S4 for a number of weeks now, I figured I'd tell you all what I think about it (in light of my only other Android phone, the Galaxy Nexus). First off, Yes, they're both Samsung. The Galaxy Nexus didn't make me want to buy another Samsung. It didn't make me want to NOT buy another Samsung. It just happened that for now, the S4 was the right phone at the right price at the time I bought it. Had I a little more disposable income I would have taken a closer look at the likes of the G2, the Note 3, possibly the S5. Sadly, my carrier is really heavy on Samsung, not a lot of other Androids.

Anyway, in no order and as I think of stuff - here we go.

Headphone jack. My Gnex had it on the bottom, where it should be. I don't use headphones a lot, but when I do, it's really nice to drop my phone in a pocket (top down, screen side against my leg) and when I pull it out, it's right side up. The S4's TOP headphone jack makes this impossible and it's a little frustrating every time.

Build Quality/materials. I tend to have sweaty hands. It sucks, esp when you grab smooth plastic like a phone. The S4 sucks for this, but so far I'm doing ok with it, I just have to be a little more careful. I think the thinness of the device makes it a bit harder to hold. My Gnex had an extended battery which made it a bit fatter (and smoothed out that odd reverse chin thing they had) which made it easier to hold - plus the back cover was slightly textured which also helped. Anyway, a cheap-o TPU case should be in the mail any day (thanks eBay!). Speaking of eBay, I also grabbed a glass screen protector. (I had none so far, and was always worried about the screen getting scratched). It's not brand-name or anything, but the packaging claims it's 9H hardness, so that will help. An added benefit is that it gives a bit of extra weight to the phone, which makes it feel more solid when you hold it and not so feather-light. I don't want a heavy heavy phone but the first few days were a little unsettling as I got used to how light the S4 felt.

Software/TouchWiz - wow. This was a huge jump, going from a Nexus to one of the most feature-laden skins out there. For the most part I don't mind, I've even settled back to the stock launcher for now (Tried Apex Pro, and Action Launcher Pro - both favorites on my Gnex). I like Action Launcher, so I'll probably bounce between the 2.

Storage - yep, didn't take me long to start running out of room. Grabbed an 8gig card and that should do me for now. If that runs out, I'll get a 16gig and use the 8 in my Huawei Y300 (relegated to music player status at work). I figured it would happen, but not this soon. Meh, I wasn't worried, because I knew I could expand the memory.

Software (on-screen) vs Hardware (physical/capacitive) navigation. This is a mixed bag for me. I really like all the screen real-estate, and having the full 5", rather then a spec of 5" but losing a piece of the bottom because of the buttons. I really miss swiping up on the home button to get to Google Now though. I didn't realize how much I used it until I had to go without that quick swipe-up. Effortless! The capacitive buttons don't bug me at all, the clicky home button is a bit jarring though. It takes away from the whole experience. Ideally (for me) I'd take 3 capacitive buttons, with the ability to swipe up for Google Now.

Camera/Media/Sound. No comparison at all. None. The only thing that would give my Gnex ANY sort of edge here would be the fact that I had PowerAmp Pro installed on it. I loved that media player, esp the EQ settings. I haven't found the need or desire to install it on my S4, so that kinda kills that point anyway. (Besides, I'm loving Google Play Music All Access!)

When I last used my Gnex, I had it running CM11 (nightly builds) for that wonderful KitKat goodness - I tried a few of the other KitKat builds and none had the stability of CM. Day-to-Day use, doing stuff that would start to bog down my Gnex, the S4 takes it all in stride and then smiles and asks if that's all I've got. I could get my Gnex to bog down and lag out fairly easily - although not very often in day-to-day use it still happened far to often. I think I've only managed to get my S4 to choke and stumble a bit ONCE. (And if I recall, I was editing a photo, streaming music, and had a number of social media apps chugging away in the background too among other things). Day to day? nope. Then again I keep my recently used apps list fairly clear - a habit from my Gnex that probably doesn't hurt here. Might be taking a hit on the battery a bit instead of leaving apps in the background, but *shrug* it's a habit.

Oh yeah - battery life. I wasn't sure what to expect. People said the Gnex had terrible battery life, and it did. Even with the extended battery it was barely passable - and I'm no power user. People said the battery life in the S4 wasn't that great, so I wasn't sure. I figured it would be better somewhat - but I wasn't sure by how much.

Typical day at work with the Gnex I'd have to have it plugged in for part of my shift. Either to top it up at the start of my shift, or near the end so I could make it through my shift. The S4 I still take my charger along, but rarely need it. If its a quiet shift I'll be on my phone more - so I'll plug it in, but most nights I could just leave it at home. The only reason I take it is I know I'll have time to charge it there so I might as well take advantage of that right?

Anything else you're curious about what I've found in the transition between the Galaxy Nexus and the S4? Fire away! (happy Saturday evening my friends!!)

I've only used it on an S4, but I also love PowerAmp 😀
Initially only bought it because Google Play Music would cause an annoying whine while listening with my over-ear headphones. Didn't happen on YouTube or gallery. Didn't happen on any other phones. Gave PowerAmp a try and bought the full version within a few days. Sounds so much better and no whine 🙌

Anyway...Glad you're enjoying the phone. Still loving mine (Although I did have to flash an AOSP ROM)

Glad to hear that you are feeling better!

I used to get a lot of migraines when I was younger, it made me vomit sick too.

As I said, glad to hear that you are feeling better!

Got a little exercises, a little sunburnt, a little awesome great day and some toddlers that went to bed early. Today was absolutely beautiful weather :)

Tomorrow is my youngest daughter's 2nd birthday party. We got her a new sandbox and a new big girl bed like her sister's. Don't tell her, it'll be a surprise tomorrow morning :)

I normally use the phone by itself, rarely use the included headphones and most of the time I use my jawbone, like today having a beer as you can see in the pic below.
