Cheap phone around $300 for a teen in high school

Need a phone for my bro that's in high school. He currently owns a Moto G4 (NOT plus or play) 2GB/16GB with a 5.5 inch screen. He wants a Blue, Unlocked Galaxy S8 but it's out of my parents price range. He says he wants a nicer, bigger screen (5.7 or larger), more internal space, and wants a colored device. He doesn't care about the camera. Google photos is there to back up photos and videos. He downloads his own music and only has about 500 songs total. Has a 16GB SD card to add more space. It's hard to find colored phones because most phones only come in black, silver or gray, gold, or pink/rose gold. I say a case can color his phone. However, he doesn't take care of his stuff so I want my parents spending too much. We have T-Mobile so T-Mobile and unlocked phones will work. I just can't find a phone that has a screen size of 5.7 or bigger and around $300. Any suggestions?

Hmm. If taking care of his device an issue, a glass backed phone is a bit of a worry unless you buy a protective case.

But anyway, the fact that the US Market is sort of limited in options compared to the rest of the world is a bit ig an issue. Motorola released a Sterling Blue X4 last year. I'd expect that to be in your price range.

As it is you'd probably have to look at getting a second hand S8 if you want to give into all his wants.

I think the Honor 7X will be great for him.
If they don't want to deal with the politics of that choice, they can go for the Sony Xperia XA1 ultra. That's a phone that has a big display and more than 16gb of storage.

The 7X has a beautiful blue. The Ultra has a pink and also a white color.

Android Central publishes guides very frequently because there are new phones coming out all the time. There's lots of really good choices. I have teens with a Moto G5 Plus (she loves it), one with a Honor 6X, and one with a Mate 9.

The Honor 7X is a good one, as is the Moto G5 Plus (or the new E5 series), and the Nokia 6. Recently the Moto X4 is down to $299 on Amazon - and it's a really good phone too, but it does have a 5.2" screen. Depends on what features he considers to be most important (processor, RAM, frequencies supported, screen, battery life, dual band wifi, NFC, water resistance...).

Be sure to take a look at the Prime Exclusive Phones on Amazon. You'll be able to save a lot - enough for some screen protectors and a couple of different colored cases.

Here's a few good guides:

Welcome to Android Central! I too recommend the Moto G5 Plus - an all-around good phone with great features for an unbeatable price.

I would recommend the Honor 7X as well.
Also it might not be a bad idea to see how the resale market for a Galaxy S8 is on Swappa or eBay. You might be able to snag something close to your budget price with patience. The Coral Blue S8 and Orchid Grey S8 look awesome! Unlocked and TMO versions are both available on either website. Good luck.

What about LG Stylo 3 plus?

5.7in screen
2gb ram
32gb storage + sd card up to 128gb.

Around $260 @ tmobile store.

Over all a nice usable phone.
Not the most fastest or anything but works well.
Desent camera. Good screen
Average use about 10 hours.
But supports fast charge.

It cheap enough but get a glass screen cover and a slim case and it a perfect device. And you get a stylus to boot.
My total cost was about $280 with all.

This is a very good suggestion!

What about Xiaomi Redmi 5? The screen size is 5.7, 3300 mAh and 3GB RAM. Its color is really cool - light blue.
