Checking for updates! Service unavailable

I'm currently using the Verizon S3, and whenever I manually check for updates via Settings-> About device-> software update-> check new I get a return error "service unavailable: check for system updates under settings > about device when service is available."

I've tried limiting the phone to CDMA (a fix that previously worked for the HTC thunderbolt), which didn't work.
I've tried waiting it out (for a week now) and nothing has popped up.

I've checked under device settings to make sure that I am connected to the network and its working and everything, the updater just doesn't work.

Please help! I don't want this to be a problem when JB is released, thanks!

Guess I'll look elsewhere for an answer. Thanks anyways.

Same issue here, Akakurt. Any luck finding any answers elsewhere? I've tried restarting my phone, pulling the battery, switching from CDMA/LTE all different ways...none of it works.

I noticed in a couple other threads that people were unable to check for updates...but I take it this isn't a "majority" issue.

Im getting the same problem with my Droid Razr Maxx. I still haven't received the ICS update because of this. But I should also say I haven't put fourth the effort into fixing it since I'm not currently using it. If you find anything please be sure to update this thread.

Yesterday I ended up calling VZW customer service...since it's been over a week since the GS3 update came out, and I am still getting the "service unavailable" error when I check for an update. Customer service had no clue, and just had me restart. I was then transferred to tech support, who had me pull the battery, hold power down (to discharge capacitors), and remove the SIM card...."service unavailable" even after all that. Tech support then got a Samsung tech support person on the line, who just reverified that I try restarting and everything else I had just done. So, 45 minutes later, I still have no answer, and no one has any clue why I am receiving the "service unavailable" error. Both the VZW and Samsung tech support guys believe that the update just hasn't been pushed out to my phone yet. I informed them, numerous times, that I don't believe that is the case, because I received the same "service unavailable" error well before VZW actually released an update. Additionally, my wife's GS3 was able to pull the update just fine, and even before that, her GS3 was at least able to confirm that no update was available. VZW tech support said that he will follow up with me in a week, to see if I get the update....which I highly doubt I will.

I just hope that someone figures this issue out before Jelly Bean gets released to VZW GS3's.....next spring! (ha!)

Just picked up my s3 yesterday. As soon as I connected to the network it asked me to update. I've heard of thunderbolt owners getting new phones because their phones wouldn't update.

Settings > Application Manager > Google Service Framework > Force Stop/Clear Data/Enable. Mine did it too. Works now. You're welcome.

The only solution for me, was a factory reset. I tried all of the above mentioned tips to no avail. Thanks to all for the tips. Verizon tech support had no clue of how to fix this problem.

Thanks..but no. It did not work, at all. I tried the "Force Stop" multiple times...still receiving the "Service unavailable" error.

Bummer...Should have...Must be something wrong with the phone or ROM then. It worked on mine, and that's exactly what we did on the GNex when it did it, also. Good luck!

I'm in the same boat. I've tried all these things and nothing worked. I called Best Buy since I upgraded there but they said they've never heard of this problem. Going to return it this weekend if I can't get this fixed. I'm also 100% stock.

I'm not rooted...100% stock GS3 here as well. Again, the issue is not that it is not seeing the update and just can't pull it....the phone just cannot check for an update at all. My wife's GS3 has been able to check for an update since day 1....and her phone would actually say that the "software is up to date" and give the day's date. Mine has given me the "service unavailable" error since day one...and can't check for an update, whether there really is an update out there or not.

Is this what you get? Cause its all I get as well.

Here's a screenshot of what I get. As you can somewhat see in the background...there is no date associated with "Status last checked on". It has not been able to "connect" since day 1. Even though the Status says "Software is up to date," I'm sill on version I535VRLF2.

I ended up taking mine back because of it and they gave me a different one and I got the update right away with the replacement.
