Choosing a good midrange phone

So i've been living without smartphone for a long time and seeing as my old Nokia 2730 classic is coming to its end i want to buy one, but have no idea what phone should i choose.

I narrowed my choice mainly to Nexus 5x or Alcatel Idol 4? I don't have any specific requirements, though i like listening to music mainly through headphones/earphones. I mostly seek a good performance that could last me 2-3 years.

I heard about the lags in Nexus 5x and seeing that Idol 4 comes with 3 GB i am thinking of getting it (also the promise of good music quality is very tempting too), but there is overheating issue that Snapdragon 617 processor has (or at least i heard of that) and no Gorilla Glass on Idol 4 (it has Dragontrail alternative, but i have no idea how scratch resistant it is for a phone made of glass).... Also no 4G+ (probably not a very big deal) or fingerprint sensor on Idol 4. Is 2 GB RAM on Nexus 5x a very big limitation?

Other similar phones in this price range like Moto G4 Plus or Huawei P9 lite come with 2 GB of RAM in my country. I know that any of these phones would be an improvement over my old Nokia, but i really don't want to buy something that isn't going to last long enough for me.
So what phone could you recommend to me?

The lag on the 5X was fixed Q1 of this year, prior to when I bought mine in March. From a software perspective, the 5X is the only one that has any prayer of relevance in 2018/2019 and it's going to be more secure out of the box, updated more frequently and it will be updated and more secure for much longer than the alternatives. From a hardware perspective, other than being made of plastic, it's got top notch components including one of the most accurate displays on the market, a solid 808 processor, 2 GB of RAM is plenty to run stock Android, one of the best fingerprint scanners on the market.

For the G4 Plus, the only version of that I'd recommend is the 64 GB with 4 GB of RAM. If that's not available, IMO it's a pass. Alcatel is right out IMO because I always encourage people to avoid off brands.

Two other options to look at are the OnePlus 3 and the ZTE Axon 7 if they're available.

Yeah the 5x is great. Nice cameras, good specs and performance. I had one but I gave it up because the size and the tallness got to me. You can't go wrong with it at all. Battery life isn't the best though, it's just ok.
