I've been using the Note 8 since it came out and the V30 also since then. I've ultimately gone back and forth a lot, but have decided to stick to the V30. Primary reasons:

1. DAC
2. Battery life in my case is way better with the V30, particularly standby time. Maybe that's a 7.1.2 vs. 7.1.1 issue? Maybe it's the smaller screen, though I use the V30 in UHQ resolution all the time and get better battery life than the note on regular HAD.
3. Size, and ease of use because of the size.
4. Fingerprint reader.
5. Wide angle camera vs. 2X zoom camera.
6. Video camera

I find the screen on my V30 to be very very close to the Note 8. I can barely tell them apart other than default brightness being lower on the V30 and outdoor max brightness also being lower. I do use vibrant color mode.

To me, having Tidal connected directly to my car aux from the V30 is so amazing, and impacts my life positively, that the DAC alone is reason enough. The big difference between the V30 DAC and the V30/G6 is that the DAC in the V30 doesn't eat up battery like there's no tomorrow while the latter 2 phones did when I used the HiFi on setting. Awesome phone, and while not perfect, I consider the V30 the best phone of 2017.

Thanks. Great post. Love my LG V30!

I think a lot of what's wrong over at LG's Mobile section is poor advertising, they made a phone last year that didn't sell very well, the G5. And personally I think it's because Samsung is the Apple of Android. So many people do not even understand what kind of software their Samsung phone is running, here is a perfect example of that: My sister in law came over to stay a week with my wife after having surgery, she tells me she has to run to the AT&T store because she forgot her charger at home, her phone is just a Samsung S7, nothing special about the charger or micro USB cable, so I told her I have like 3 chargers and cables laying around here she could use, her reply was " oh I can't use any of those because this is a Samsung phone, and your phone isn't a Samsung phone. After trying to explain it to her, I gave up and told her where the AT&T store was so she could buy a Samsung charger. This is a problem not only for LG but any Android manufacturer that isn't Samsung.

I recently looked at every option out there for an Android phone, and the top item on the list was DAC / high quality amp able to drive high impedance earphones. It's surprising that there aren't more choices out there. And I'd bet that situation will be changing soon.

My take:

1. DAC
Pretty amazing and not sure if it's any better than the DAC in my V10.
2. Battery life in my case is way better with the V30, particularly standby time. Maybe that's a 7.1.2 vs. 7.1.1 issue? Maybe it's the smaller screen, though I use the V30 in UHQ resolution all the time and get better battery life than the note on regular HAD.
Coming from a V10 this is a huge improvement in battery life. It's great to have 40%+ at the end of the day.
3. Size, and ease of use because of the size.
The V30 is a dainty phone. I miss the heft of the V10. It felt more solid.
4. Fingerprint reader.
In the perfect place and definitely essential.
5. Wide angle camera vs. 2X zoom camera.
Love the two lenses on the back.
6. Video camera
For serious video projects will be using logs for more editiing options.

Coming from a V10 -
-I miss the volume buttons on the back and headphone jack on the bottom. Far superior ergnomics but LG had to go with the flow evidently.
-Removable battery - I thought that I'd miss it but with the V30's long battery life not a problem. A small battery pack as a backup - 6700 mAh, is essential since I never let the phone go below 20%.
-The floating tool bar is useful.
-The 2nd screen is not missed. The always on is very useful.

Overall - the V30 is a highly refined piece of gear. Long battery life, amazingly good video and still camera, the OS isn't stock Android but not bloated.

This is my third LG phone in a row. I don' think it's due to brand loyalty. Removable battery sucked me in and the DAC made me stay.

The problem is advertising, not the product. If you don't use the S Pen that much, the v30 is pretty much the best choice you can get. It's basically trading the S Pen for the DAC. Plus the v30 is cheaper.

How will people buy them when their ads are nowhere to be seen and there's no in store kiosks for their phones. They're always 'we have some in the back' type.

Bestbuy has a dedicated Samsung section, not to mention, the cell phones out on display for carriers are pretty much all Samsungs and Iphones. I was in one last week, and they didn't even have a V30 on display, and in the corner, not even turned on was a G6, and some other budget LG phone. I really had to look just to find a G6.
Also, watch T.V., and I'm seeing a lot of Iphone, and Galaxy note commercials. Haven't seen one for an LG phone.

LG had me with the V10, the combination of replaceable batteries, sd card slot, dac, and durability lured me in and ultimately was very happy with it. Unfortunately, I was hit with the dreaded boot loop and had to exchange my phone 3 times.
What really bothered me about the boot loop was not the fact that I had to go with out the phone for weeks at a time , which consequently got me in the habit of always having a back up phone, but the fact that LG was still selling a known defective product. Every time I would take my phone back T-Mobile I would see the v10 still being sold, instead of being recalled like Samsung did with the note 7. To make matter even worse, LG did not even try to placate affected V10 owners with a discounted upgrade to the V20 but chooses instead to hype their 2 year warranties.
In my opinion it was LG handling of the boot loop issue, which also affected the G series of phones, that really tank LG reputation. Once that goes, no amount of features, increase in advertising budget, or positive reviews can change that. Especially in an already tight android market.

The G5 didn't appeal to the masses and LG lost some customer base due to the G4's issues.

I really thought of going to the N8 once I found out that LG dropped the removable battery.
But I really feel in love with the wide angle camera on my V20. So any new phone MUST have a wide angle lens. The N8 did not!
Also the N8 is way to tall (for me). My V30's screen ig great and the wireless charging makes me forget about the loss of the removable battery.... The waterproof rating is a good plus (but both N8 & V30 have that).
After a few months with my V30 I am not disappointed.

Reasons I avoided the S8, S8+ and Note 8.

1) aspect ratio - Samsung is using an 18.5 x 9 ratio which to me just looks too tall and skinny.
2) fingerprint sensor location - What were they thinking?
3) curved edge screen - Grew to hate the curved edges on the S7 Edge which the V30 has replaced.

This is my first Lg phone. I was worried after the G4 debacle, but the 2 year warranty put my mind at ease. So far I'm really loving the battery life, and the size is really perfect. Also, the $200 visa card I got from LG reducing the price to $640 helped too.

A marketing problem.

Considering the three pillars of marketing (product itself, advertisement and sales/price) you can say, that LG does a lot right with the product, but is absolute crap with advertisement and sales.

In my Country (Austria, central europe) nearly nobody knows the V30. It is still waaay too expensive (compared to a S8 or a Mate 10 Pro) and they only recently started selling it (months after Samsung had their phones on the market).

This is definitely NOT the way to earn money.

So glad you are enjoying your V30! I personally am amazed at how "small" the V30 is compared to its objective size at 6". I held my friend's V30 after holding my other friend's Pixel 2 XL; and the V30 was surprisingly easier to hold with my small hands. So I definitely agree with you about size being great.

If the V30 were 16/9 ratio I would consider it.

Marketing. I went to four individual phone shops before buying online and all four said that while Samsung was literally showering them with fully working demo devices, LG would not even give them dummies...

The Note 8 is beautiful but kinda boring. The V30 has a wide angle front and rear camera, making it more useful in certain situations. Honestly the 2x zoom telephoto looks horrible on the Note 8, cellphone cameras are not meant to zoom. Of course the audio experience is way better on V30 because LG added the DAC, come on Samsung, a $1000 phone and it lacks hardware? From my personal experience, almost everyone I knew with the Note phones never used their S Pen, yet alone know ALL the special features of it. And lastly, the V30 has better ergonomics, the phone has a better shape and isn't freakishly tall and skinny. The fingerprint scanner is correctly shaped and placed as well, and don't forget the tap to wake screen feature. Not saying the Note 8 is a bad phone, I just prefer the V30.
