Chrome hogging data?

I have an HTC One using 4.3 I have recently "lost" a lot of data. I think I've narrowed it down to Chrome, which hogs about 10mb every morning around 6am. This is detailed as "foreground" in my usage stats, but it's not "me" using it. Strangely, today I disabled chrome mid-morning and started using HTC's own internet browser. This immediately hogged 14mb of "foreground" data also.
