Hi, I'm having issues getting the chrome app to stop opening the YouTube app, when I select a video. It won't give me an option.

Things I've done:

Settings - apps - YouTube - set as default - clear default

Settings - apps - YouTube - set as default - go to supported urls - always ask

YouTube app - force stop - storage - clear cache

YouTube app - force stop - storage - clear data

Chrome app - force stop - storage - clear cache

Chrome app - force stop - storage - clear data

Disable YouTube app, got asked, but soon as re-enable the app opens again.

Restarted phone each time.

I have Galaxy S7. I have directly copied my S6 onto it. The S6 is asking when I select link, the S7 won't... It just opens the app. Its driving me up the wall. I want the mobile version to open, so I can play with the screen locked, etc...

If I put chrome I desktop mode, it then gives me the option, of what to open it with. However, this is impractical when searching, as the writing is too small, and the links are to sensitive, you easily open the wrong one, when just touching the screen to scroll.

I mean this with absolute respect, please don't reply telling me to do, what I've listed already. I appreciate help and advice, but giving me a link to the above steps, is no help at all.

Thanks in advance.

I tested it on my Pixel 2 XL on Pie, and it plays the video on the mobile YouTube site on Chrome without problems. What version of Chrome do you have, and which version of Android is the S7 running? I have 69.0.3497.100.

Occasionally, an update to Android System Webview can mess things up for certain devices. On Nougat and above, Android System Webview is folded into Chrome, so if your version of Chrome is current, see what happens if you uninstall updates (if possible -- this can only be done if Chrome was preinstalled). This wouldn't be a permanent fix, since the phone would then prompt you to update Chrome again. It's more of a troubleshooting step.

OK... I rolled back the chrome app on my phone. Disabling it first, then uninstalling the updates. I re-enabled it and it started functioning as I want. But, now the menu has stopped coming up, and it's reverted back to the initial issue. I haven't selected to always do that action, and I haven't updated the version of chrome. I've checked the YouTube app, and it is still set to ask. It's driving me up the wall this. Its so frustrating.

OK... I've noticed that if I do a search, and then select videos, it's listing all the results as YouTube app. This is written in green. So, I think this is the problem. Its not actually giving the option, as the results are all direct links to the app.

Ah, I see what you're saying now. I just tried what you're doing (i.e., searching for a video using the Google search site on the mobile browser, and then tapping the Video tab), and yes, all of the YouTube video links there are for the app, not the mobile site. What I had tested before was going to YouTube.com first in Chrome, then searching for a video there.

It may just be a limitation of Chrome in mobile mode rather than desktop mode. I'd send feedback to Google about it, even though the chance of them changing it is relatively low.
