Chromecast compatibility in the UK?

So if i were to buy a chromecast online for around ?30, would it function properly? I heard atm only the official google apps and netflix work. But I was wandering if the American version will un different software versions to the eventual UK version which could lead to issues with UK apps and services such as iplayer once they are released, is this true? Or would I be able to overwrite the firmware with a UK version once it is released?
