I picked up my Chromecast the other day from BestBuy...Love it! But have a question or two: Is the heat build up normal even when not casting? And does the white status light stay on or is there a sleep mode?

Thanks

Heat is normal based on the posts people hve made here. the light is to indicate power to the device so it stays on . Some people have put electrical tape over it, persoally I refrain from adding anything to electronics that can trap heat.. As of yet there is no "sleep mode".

Yes, the unit does get warm.
If you have a USB port on your TV, use it to power the Chromecast and it will turn off when your TV is off. If plugged into a wall outlet for power, it will stay on.

Tired that but my 2007 Sharp HDTV's USB port doesn't turn the Chromecast light on. If I got a new TV then I wouldn't need the Chromecast since it would be a smart TV.

Maybe, maybe not. The Chromecast is capable of doing some things that smart TV's can't do or IMO the Chromecast does better. I have a Panasonic Viera 55 inch smart TV that I bought last year. It has a web browser, Netflix and YouTube. It doesn't have Google Play Music or Google Movies & TV. And it's much easier navigating through the web browser by casting tabs from my PC, and Netflix and YouTube using the Chromecast and my smartphone than trying to use the TV's apps and remote control. Chromecast capabilities should expand in the future too.
