Chromecast on a 720p tv? Picture washed out

So I just got my chromecast yesterday and hooked it up, but noticed the picture quality was all washed out.... I have a 720p tv and noticed that the chromecast is forcing it to display in 1080p most likely causing this issue. Attached are some pics of what I'm talking about. So.... What I'm asking is, can the chromecast be set statically to 720p? If not i'll have to return it as its unusable.... Thanks in advance!

What brand television do you have? I highly doubt this would matter but is there an HDMI/DVI port on the television? On Samsung models this would be Port #1 and I know a lot of times PC devices don't work properly without this port. I'm curious if Chromecast is experiencing the same issue.

Yes there is a hdmi port on the tv... how else would it show up... it is a viewsonic tv with only 1 hdmi port.

I had intermittent problems before with pink tint with another device - research suggested that when you have a pink or purple tint via HDMI, there's a handshaking problem that causes the wrong colorspace to be sent - RGB vs YPbPr. Can be due to a loose connection or build-up of capacitance. Try unplugging and replugging into the HDMI port, and changing up how you're powering it - whether via HDMI, USB or AC adapter, so see if will properly handshake when re-syncing.

I did switch it to YPbPr and that did fix the color, but it didnt fix the blurriness or the screen tearing seen on the right side in the pics.

I thought there was only one way to power it... through usb, it doesnt get power through the hdmi

You are correct. Also through testing, people have try to force Netflix to send 720p to their chromecast and it still pushes out 1080p.

How does it look when you cast from a Chrome tab on your laptop? If up-converting to 1080p is the problem, perhaps going through Chrome will help since it seems that while the feature is in beta it only runs at 720p (see picture). I'm not at home at the moment, so I can't check to see if my tv up-converts it despite the setting.

the tv never flips to 720p, still says its at 1080p

Chromecast itself will try to push out a 1080p signal. There is no way to change it to 720p on the device. Netflix and Youtube bypass the settings in the browser and go directly to the Chromecast.
And it looks that Chromecast will always try to push 1080p even if you are using a tabcast for 720p content.

Sorry for the slight grave digging, but I'm not lying when I say after a couple hours searching, this is the first post I've seen online reporting Chromecast to work on a 720p tv. Everything else I've seen said on 720p tv's, they see the boot screen and then it blanks out when it switches to full 1080p.

Is this a 720p only t.v. you're using or is it one that can accept 1080p and then down converts to fit the 720 display? I've seen some people having mild success with the latter type but image quality suffers a lot due to the down converting. I was thinking of getting a Chromecast, but my t.v. is 720p only (yay Wal-Mart special lol), and the lack of a resolution change is apparently creating quite the stir.
