Chromecast with Google TV external hard drive format?

Just picked up a Chromecast with Google TV and I added an adapter to it to allow for external storage. That all works fine, however, when it comes to the external storage it needs to be formatted correctly and Android will only format it to FAT32. Due to the size limitations of FAT32, that's not optimal for my use. Does anyone know of / have a suggestion for any app that will add additional OTG support that will allow for the use of NTFS or exFat?

An app won't make Android compatible with NTFS, but I thought Android supported exFAT. You could try using a PC to format the drive instead of doing it within Android.

There are a few apps, including one from Paragon, who is trustworthy that claim it's possible to add but I wasn't going to pay for the app without checking here first. - https://www.paragon-software.com/free/exfat-ntfs-fat32-hfs-android/. Even BlackBerry added exFAT support through an app but that only works on BlackBerry Android devices.

The inclusion is up to the OEM's. They can add it in or leave it out since it requires licensing and Google seems to have left it out on the Chromecast with Google TV.

And yes, I did try doing it on a computer but all formats aside from FAT32 are not recognized and it just asks to format using Android.

Unfortunately I have found that both android and Chromebooks reformat a drive to its own format and it won't show up in windows either. I don't know anyway around that and it won't accept exfat or ntfs

Just a 1TB portable drive I had kicking around.
I think even Samsung also accepts exFAT

Google stuff is stuck with the FAT32 , as for programs/apps that can change this I've heard about it but no experience if it works or not :(

I figured it out.. installed JS USB OTG which adds support for NTFS and exFat. Now I can plug the drive in and play files from it with VLC. Probably some other apps which work as well. Only caveat is that other apps, such as file managers won't recognize it. You have to load any files from the JS USB OTG app itself.

I have read to use Rufus Disk Utility. I haven't used it yet as I haven't found an adapter to use. What adapter are you using.
I used Rufus to format a 128g usb drive. I set it for fat32 and it works great with the Chromecast with Google TV. I used my laptop to run Rufus.

Hi Bla1ze,

Thank you for your mention of JS USB OTG. I was doing the exact same thing as you were trying to do. Use VLC (or similar, such as Kodi) to read an external NTFS HDD.

Per your recommendation, I went ahead and purchased and installed JS USB OTG. When I connect my 2TB NTFS HDD, JS USB OTG prompts if I want itbto handle the drive, so I select OK. However, when JS USB OTG then attempts to show the contents of the HDD, it just states EMPTY FOLDER. And when I launch VLC (since you mentioned that it could play your NTFS files via JS USB OTG), I only see the Local files (internal 4.1GB of CCwGTV), and not the NTFS drive.

When you open the JS USB OTG app, does it list the content of your 1TB NTFS drive? How do you browse for your NTFS drive in VLC?

Thanks in advance for your reply! -Dokes

Its always like this, in most of the forums it will end up without a clear answer. SO NOW WHAT? ? ? How about the USB hub (which brand), power adapter 20, 40, 60, or 90 Watt (which brand)? ? ? Probably best idea will be to use the "Google Chromecast with Google tv" like it is, and buy an NVidia Pro (2019 model) which will work with anything you connect to it.
Good luck to all, Mr. Dutchie.

Yes I am upset, because whatever forum I try to get some information, it always ends up without any links, answers or suggestions where to buy a good working USB C hub and power adaptor for the "GCCGTV". Most of the mentioned USB C hubs are not available or sold out! Thanks for your response by the way.

@Bla1ze is one of the main administrative bigwigs on the forum staff, so he tends to be pretty responsive. Could always tag him and ask him for more details -- let's see if he has some links for you.

This is the one I use. https://www.amazon.ca/AUKEY-Etherne...hawk-future-ca-20&ascsubtag=UUacUvbUpU6926701. It's probably overkill but I had it laying around. I believe the trick is to find one that offers Power Delivery because one of the other ones I have without it does not work.
