Cleaning the gap?

I hate to keep beating a dead horse but looking around the device I assume this is more visible on the black version than mine that is white but there seems to be gaps even on the back of the device. I did some more searching on the web and found the below twitter post that is very similar to what i see on the back of the phone. Again I can run a sticky note without a problem around the edges. Does this happen on your device as well?

This is horrible for my OCD! :P

Out of curiosity I contacted Google Support and they are offering me a RMA device. Aside from this gap my current phone has no issues. I'm not sure getting a refurbished device will fix the issue if this is just standard on their phones. I'd had to get a replacement device that could possibly have other issues instead and still have the same gap "issue".

Whatever you do, do NOT send your perfectly good working phone in for a refurbished replacement because of your OCD. You'll regret it forever. I'm OCD as well, but I've learned when to make the right choice and live with something versus making the wrong choice and creating a huge problem out of nothing.

A refurbished replacement will have the same gaps but also come with someone else's problems.... which is the last thing you want. Just keep your phone clean, maybe put a case on it that covers up the gaps, and enjoy it ;-)

Get a case that has a lip that goes over the edge of the front (that's for screen protection if it ever falls flat face down), and you won't see the dirt, so it won't bother you. (I can't tell you if my 2 has the same problem, because I'm not going to take it out of the case - it's a hassle, and I risk breaking tabs off the case.)

Good thing you don't have removable battery lol.

Thank you all. I came very close to sending it in as I have already received the email from Google with the link that expires within 72 hours to order the replacement device. I'm just going to let it expire and live with it as is.

As suggested I am also now shopping for a case that will go over the edges (maybe Spigen clear case to show off the white of the phone?) to protect against dust getting in. Ironically the culprit of a lot of lint/dust slipping into those edges is Google's own fabric case. If anybody has any recommendations I'd appreciate it.

Thanks again all for your input and pardon for treating the forum like a regular chatroom with so many messages! I'm good now!

My Note 3 does, and I have a spare. But the Otterbox case was different in those days.

I always go for the Otterbox Defender. Unbelievable protection, I prefer a belt holster and the holster is almost indestructible, compared to some other thin ones. (Yes, it's more expensive, but my Note 3 is going on 6 years old and it's still protecting the phone.)

Yeah true , outer box were different, me personally couldn't have a big case like that but they definitely do protect.

I don't mean the size of the case - I can't handle the phone without the case. I've gotten so used to the size that the bare phone feels like something's missing.

I meant the construction of the solid plastic part of the case. The tabs seem a bit easier to snap off now. The older "tabs" were just part of that half of the case, now they're tabs that stick out from the case.

Who knows, though? Maybe the older design had other problems that the new design fixed (and that I'm not aware of).

Oh ok gotcha, yeah I can imagine phone feeling akward without case being on for so long .

Out of curiosity, can it damage the device if you use a sticky or other piece of paper to gently remove the debris from the gap?

So far I've been doing it and no issues. I've also been doing it less since I stopped using the fabric case and bought a $10 case that goes over the edges so hardly anything gets in the gap anymore.

I still find it odd that the edge of the sticky could not only slide in the gap but also under the screen a bit but again I've had no issues to date.
I also find blowing on the edges clears the dust out. I've read some people use compressed air but I'm not sure that's a good idea...

I would hope I'm getting all the dirt out otherwise I may be growing a whole ecosystem under my screen and not be aware. haha.
