Clear all for a task manager?

This should be pretty easy, but what I'm looking to do is, whenever I touch the running apps button at the bottom of the phone (the square button on the right in the home row), I want to hit a clear all. I'm new to the pure Android experience so I don't know if it's in there or just hidden, but by way of example, on past phones, when I hit that button, it would show all my apps running, and I could simply hit clear all, which would wipe away those apps that are running (and potentially contributing to battery drain). Now, when I hit that square button, the apps are in there like a Rolodex, but in order to swipe them away, I have to do each one individually. Is there an easier way?

I kill tasks in case there are any keeping the phone awake. I wish there was a clear all -- the OPO I used to have had that

When you press the square and all the apps are displayed, press the triangle(the button on the far left)

I'm with you on this one, as one reviewer said "I dont wanna be havin'ta close all my instagram creepin infront'a people while they waitin to check out my phone"

I tried your suggestion and it doesn't kill the apps. I just don't want all those apps I may have opened to be running in the background, and therefore using more battery. I haven't used a task killer app since Lollipop came out because there was always that easy "Clear All" button when you pressed the square button. Now, if you're saying that all those apps in the background use no power or performance, then I can go with that, but I would find that hard to believe. Seems like it should be there and I saw it on so many Android phones in the past that I just assumed it was part of the OS. Am I wrong, or is there some solution?

There is not a clear all button on stock nexus devices. There is no app and no setting to just add a clear all button WITHOUT being rooted. In which case, if you're rooted, you can enable that functionality through various methods.

If you can see in the screenshot, the bottom right corner has a clear all button. Which I hardly use since ram management is very good now.

To be clear, running apps and apps in the recent apps list are two different things: just because it's there doesn't mean it's running, and swiping it away doesn't stop it from running.

Google didn't put that in their version of Android because it shouldn't need it. If you have one bad app you can kill that.

Thank you for that answer. I'm so used to my carrier phones running apps in the background and using energy, I was afraid that the same may be happening on this phone. To clarify, I wasn't having problems with performance or any specific apps, I was just trying to maximize my battery and performance potential. Thank you fellow forum members in helping me understand a "pure" Android phone.
