Clockword recovery / no service?

When i flash clockwork recovery, I lose service, like i do on any kernel that's not stock. Do you use the clockwork recovery to flash a new rom (today I want to play with cm 7.1) and then flash back to stock?
I'm afraid to get too deep into this without understanding. I successfully flashed numerous kernels and clockwork recovery, but I lose functionality on the phone (bottom buttons stop workign (except back)) and service is lost (no phone, internet, data, etc).

I cannot find a guide that addresses this concern and wonder if it simply means I am doing something wrong or if I should just move forward and see....

Thanks,
Pete

I should issue caution that there is no CM 7.1 for the Epic Touch 4G. What you see are International versions. They have just begun working on it for our phones.

You should also make sure ANYTHING you flash is for our phone and not the international. Our phone is the SPH-D710. That probably explains why you have no service. Different radios, etc.

Thanks, best info yet! This explains a lot.

Clockwork, as well as many custom kernels have caused people to experience loss of service. Something still needs to be worked out on the kernel end of development

Thanks. I've been itching to play, but have not found a working kernel yet.

What would happen, now that I'm rooted, if I tried to flash a rom (like cm7) onto the phone?

Aside from backing up the old rom and restoring, is there an easy way to flash the stock rom?

Pete

Yes. Easiest and safest thing to do would be to create a complete backup through Recovery before you install 7.1. Then, regardless of what happens, you should always be able to boot into Recovery with Volume Up + Power and do a restore to put things back exactly as they are now.

Otherwise, I haven't looked, but I imagine you can find the stock ROM on xda. If so, put the .zip file on your SD card and should the need arise, you can install the ROM through Recovery.

That would be accurate if it existed. There is NO CM7.1 for the Epic Touch 4G. The Cyanogen Team just got the phone and are working on it as we speak. Flash the SG2 releases out now, and you'll hose your modem among other things.

There is now a stock kernel with CWM over at xda. I just installed it and hope this helps reduce my LoS occurrences.

I've been waiting to root until this was available. Flashed it and everything is perfect so far.
