There is no way to close an application, or anything i do. When i open up something, the only way out of it is to hit the home button or to hit the back button a few times. I can tell it is still running by holding down the home button.

How do i close an application (without a task manager)?

If I can't close an application, then does that mean every application i run will always be up and running? That can't be good.

dont worry about it, droid will close them it self, its not like BB, or you can go to market and download "advance task killer" if it makes u feel better.

You must be coming from a BlackBerry. The Android OS takes care of all of that for you. You no longer need to worry about closing vs. exiting and the resources it stresses. If you insist, you can get ATK (Advanced Task Killer) from Market and you can manage which applications are running or not, but you don't have to. At all. Not even a little bit.
