Cloud storage question.

I've never really used cloud storage and in playing with both Drive and Dropbox, it seems they are geared towards uploading stuff that you then use via the storage app. I want to store stuff that I can then download to my phone as needed (primarily audio books I listen to). I want to download them so I not suckign up data usage as well depending on data connectivity. Do any sites let you download your files to you phone? I can't figure out how to do it.

There are client apps for all the major cloud outfits - Dropbox, Box, Google Drive, Skydrive, for instance - that allow you to download whatever to your phone. Since downloading is an on-demand occurrence, you can determine whether you're on a wi-fi connection or not. All (or at least most) have settings to restrict uploads from occurring when not on wi-fi.

I primarily use Dropbox to synchronize stuff like my screenplays I'm working on amongst all my computers so I don't have to worry about losing or forgetting my USB key drive someplace. I work on my laptop then switch to my desktop, etc. and the file is seamlessly there.

Excuse my ignorance, but I have both the Google Drive app as well as the DropBox app on my phone, but cannot find any way to actually download a file from either cloud service. I can only view the file or listen to it (in the case of an mp3) from the cloud. Is there some other app that I need to be able to download a file from the cloud to my phone?

In Dropbox, find the file you wish to download and long-press on it until a popup dialog appears. Choose Export at the bottom. It seems odd that it's not called "Download" because that's what you want to do, but you'll see in the next menu there are a bunch of options like attach it to Gmail (presumably to email it from the cloud to someone or like that), etc. you can do with them. Choose Export to SD Card and then pick a folder to save it to. Done.

As for Google Drive, I'm not quite sure how that works. There's a way to long-press and set files to be available offline, but I can't seem to locate where they're stored. Odd.

In Box, if you tap an item, the preview window that opens has a download arrow which will open a "save file here" dialog, but what's weird is that after downloading the photo, Gallery and JustPictures don't show it, but looking in the folder with ES File Explorer does show it and it can be opened. Very odd.

Hope this helps a little. I'm actually getting more confused as I go along.

Just get FolderSync or ES File Explorer which are both intuitive and support all major services. folder sync is good because the syncing process can be completly automated.

For Google Drive press the > button to the right of the file you want to download, then enable the 'Available Ofline' slider. Depending on what the type of file is and what app you want to play it with you may need to disable the encryption offline option in the google drive settings. The offline files should be in the Android/data/com.google.android.apps.docs/files folder

does anyone know how to sync box.net with a Linux Mint 13 KDE computer? So I can use it the same way I use dropbox.

In my android 4.1.1 I enabled offline access for a PDF file.
This file opens fine if you selected from Google Drive app but if you go to:
/Android/data/com.google.android.apps.docs/files
and try to open it, PDF reader fails it.
To test I forwarded this file to my PC and tried it from there and the result was the same. PDF reader could not open it.

Does google drive changes the content of the files in /Android/data/com.google.android.apps.docs/files

Thanks,
bahman
