Color vs Tablet and rooting?

So for a couple months now I've been wanting to get a tablet and debating which one is the best. I wanted an iPad in the beginning but with my iPhone and MacBook I don't see a reason to have that expensive of a toy when all I want it for is for some fun apps and basic browsing/movie watching (easier on a tablet out and about than my phone!).

I've been back and forth on the Galaxy line, Kindle Fire, Nook Color, and Nook Tablet. I'm not worried about a camera or anything like that since my phone is always with me so I narrowed it down to the Kindle and Nooks. The one thing that has really put me on the Nook line is expandable storage! Not sure how much I'd use but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

What I'm concerned about when googling about the color vs tablet is that the tablet can't be rooted if it comes shipped with the 1.4.1 OS. Is this true? I had an android phone for a while and loved when I rooted it so this is something I'd really like to do. Would the Color be affected the same way if this is true?

Thanks!

I'm not sure why you would want to cross over platforms when that means buying new apps for the Android side. It is fun to play around with these Nooks though.
