So opposite of some people that I have seen on the forums using an iphone while they wait out the launch of the GNEX, I am actually hoping to own my first android phone AND leave at&t for the first time.
My first phone ever was a Katana on sprint, then a Treo, both terrible phones. I went right to the 3G when it first came out, then 3g and 4.

I was planning on buying the 4S but when I heard of a device called the "Nexus Prime" the name made me curious, and I am not disappointed with the specs or the smoothness of ICS.

My dad had an HTC phone, not sure what it was but the skinned android was sluggish and laggy, and turned me off a potential android phone. Now what I am wondering is, should I rent an android phone now such as the Rezound (I was going to stay on at&t and just get the GS2 but i don't think i can wait for at&t to get this phone..) to get used to having android instead of IOS for the firs time ever, or will gingerbread be so different from ICS that i'll have to relearn how it works anyways?

Just wait for the Galaxy Nexus. The other phones have skins on top of Gingerbread, plus you'll still be learning Android by the time the Galaxy Nexus is released, assuming it really is December 8.

There are quite a few similarities between Gingerbread and ICS but also quite a lot different. If I were you I would just wait. A skinned os isn't that bad anymore with the lighter skins and more powerful hardware but still may potentially turn you off to Android.....

I've heard the Rezound is pretty smooth, even with Sense, which is notorious for being extremely slow and bloated. My phone runs the first version of Sense stock, but I've rooted and installed another ROM. Don't know how extensive your Android knowledge is, but that just means I installed a different version of Android on my phone. After using a non-skinned Android and going back to the Sense skinned Android, I realized how slow it was. Battery life has pretty much doubled and the phone is noticeably faster running stock Android.

If you don't want to get into rooting, I would suggest the Nexus if you want a smoother phone with better battery life. The Nexus will also be more future-proof since it has NFC among other hardware, as well as the earliest software updates that could take months to a year on an HTC phone. You could buy the Rezound and return it when the Nexus is out, but at this point I would just wait. Unless you NEED a phone right now I would hold off since I don't see the Nexus coming out any later than two weeks from today.

every review I've seen says that even android veterans will have to re-learn android with how many changes there are. I would just wait.

Thanks for the replies! I guess i'll hold off for the nexus, especially with this mysterious 11/29/11 VWZ ad floating around the web..

Maybe in the developing department but it looks and functions a lot like Honeycomb.
