I have just learned there are multiple sd card formats. I want to add up to 500 mb card to my lg running kitkat 4.4. Anybody know which format and size I should use?

Any card up to 32GB has to be formatted FAT32 if you want to be able to also use it in a PC. Larger than that (64GB and up) requires exFAT format. It has nothing to do with the version of Android or the make of the phone (but some phones can't handle 64GB and larger cards).

Normally, a 500MB card will come formatted as FAT32 when you get it, so all you have to do is plug it in. (And 500MB won't buy you storage for much - a few small videos, a large number of songs, etc.)
