Having import my whole ebook library (thanks to some DRM removal scripts), I've made it through a couple of books on the Reader app and I'm wondering if I'm alone in some complaints.
I think the overall problem is that HTC Reader is just one project in HTC Sense. It isn't its own project, like the way the dedicated market readers are, and as such, it lacks attention to detail.
I haven't tried the purchasing options available on the Flyer, as I prefer to only buy from sources I know I can break the DRM of.
- First of all, while regular text flows fine, Reader doesn't handle visuals well at all. You cannot zoom into them individually, nor can you scroll them.
- Footnotes and end notes do not navigate well. Unlike most eReaders, they show up as a link (not at the bottom of the page) and when you click on the link, there is absolutely no way to get back to where you were. The back button exits the app. Your best recourse is to bookmark the page you're on, click on a footnote, then navigate back using your bookmark and delete it. Ouch.
- The app cannot be used in landscape mode. Again, this goes back to the diagram, photo, and visual aid issue.
- There is no way to organize your books into genre or tag. They're just smashed together there, and that isn't very convenient for a larger collection, especially one categorized by use (work, school, leisure, whatever).
- "Bookmarks" actually toggles whether the page is bookmarked. I suspect this is a translation problem.
