First off I must say that this is an amazing forum, very very informative. I was a long time android user until my wife talked me into buying the iPhone 5s, needless to say that phone got smashed and I went right out and bought the Note 5. But all that aside, I need help with my nexus 7, I want to root it and install a custom rom in order to speed this slug up but I am confused. Did rom development for this device stop? If not, what roms are currently being updated? Is there a such thing as a better rom depending on what you use the Nexus for? I might have more questions but am unable to think of them right now. Thank you in advance for any and all help you can give me.

Rom development is alive and well for the N7 2012 (also referred to as "grouper"). That was an important criterion to help me decide to pick up a used one on the cheap.

I used Xenon HD for quite some time and it works well -- just about the best you can do with Lollipop on the device. But the lag issues seem to creep up.

Now I'm using this great spin of Kitkat 4.4.4:

[ROM][4.4.4] OmniROM for Nexus 7 WiFi (2012) | Nexus 7

Note the distinct lack of complaints in the thread. :) I strongly recommend this one as a stable, lightweight rom that, as an added benefit, contains the latest Nexus security patches.

Good luck!
