Connect electronics to USB on Nexus 4

All,

I wanted to know if its possible to connect a USB project to the nexus USB port and read data in the app?
If so, what to I need? Do I need an FTDI chip?

You need to be rooted with a custom recovery, it is called USB OTG. You can get a zip file to install and then you hook it up to a USB OTG Y cable, the USB device and power. Hope this helps
