Connecting my LG Optimus V to my Laptop, how can I get the USB connected?

Connecting my LG Optimus V to laptop

When connecting to my USB port I do not get a notification that I have a USB connection. It says I am charging my cellphone. How do I get the USB connection?

Welcome to Android Central! When you connect, is there a USB connection notification icon at the top of the screen? Swipe down the notification panel and tap it, then make sure it's set to MTP (or USB Mass Storage). If you don't see the icon, then try a different cable--some cables might only be used for charging, and not data transfer.

I have the same problem. No connection to my computer as verified by no icon on cellphone and no celllphone device connected to the computer. I have changed cables and that did not work. When connected to my computer via USB cable the cellphone is in "charging" mode. Apparently, there are two modes: charging and USB connected. But how do I get to the USB connected mode?
