Connecting to my car

Good morning everyone!

This may be a bit of a strange question and don't even know if this is the right place to ask but I figured I would start here.

I just purchased a 2016 Honda Accord yesterday and this is the first car I've had that had bluetooth available in it. I connected it okay and calls work well and I can even play music from my phone to the car. The problem I'm having is getting my navigation, the Waze app, to play sound through my car.

If I disconnect it via Bluetooth it plays fine through my phone. However when it's connected to my car, the Waze app doesn't play at all and none of the system sounds, the clicks, Etc, don't go through my car.

Could this be some setting I'm missing on my phone? I have played around with it and have not found anything. It's just strange because everything else so far it seems to work fine. I'm wondering if maybe because the car is 3 years old and the phone is so new that it may be the problem, but I sure hope not!

Any ideas or suggestions would certainly be appreciated

I have a Buick Lacrosse, but I believe that the 2016 Accord supports Android Auto. Download Android Auto from the Play Store and install it on your phone. You need to connect your phone to a USB port in your car. You may need to download Android Auto to your car if it isn't already installed. When you connect your phone to the car's USB port you should see Android Auto on your nav display. Select it and Android Auto should open on your phone. It's very easy to configure and from that point on you will get Waze on your nav display and be able to play music through the system.

Thanks for the suggestion! I will check that out.

Reading in the book, it says some vehicles have Android auto and some have "HandsFreeLink". Mine has the latter.

I'm not even sure how to download anything to my car! LOL. But I am generally speaking, tech savvy enough to where I should be able to figure it out. I will check it out and let you know.

I have an "update" or something like that on my Nav display that downloads and installs current apps to the Infotainment center.

I just spoke to the people at Honda, in there Technology support department. They said that it very well could be I need to enable it in the Waze app. But that if I'm connected to my car and everything is working oh, well everything else is working okay, it should override the radio or anyting else that's coming out and give me the instructions through the app. I'll have to try it when I get back in my car after work.

I also asked if it would be possible to download Android auto on my car and they said it was not. Oh well, it was a good thought!

Thanks again for the suggestions

I think the key is Android Auto rather than Waze, as Waze functions as part of Android Auto, if that makes any sense.

Yeah, you may be right. The first thing the agent looked up for me when I was on the phone was to see if this particular car supported Android auto. She said it did not.

However she said that from what she could tell, I may have to enable that function in the Waze app, to override other function but she may be looking at the Waze that's built into Android auto.

I'll have to give it a try and also compare it to using Google Maps. I like Waze better but if Maps works better with my car, then I may just switch over

Well I figured it out. I was running the radio and trying to get sound from my phone to override the radio when the Waze app gave me navigation. However when I switched to Bluetooth and ran music off my phone and ran the Waze app then I got everything through the car speaker.

I should have guessed that, it would be impossible for it to pick two sources at the same time. But oh, oh well.

Thanks again for all the suggestions

Glad you figured it out. Yeah a lot of older bluetooth in cars that don't have Android Auto you would need to be connected to the Audio Bluetooth to get the notifications. Newer cars even without Android Auto can now give you Nav Audio even while playing the radio.
