Personally I would wait. I am still waiting to see what motorola is gonna have and there should be some nice devices announced for the new year. Also, the G1 isn't as awesome as I hoped it to be, Android on the other hand is great. I say wait.

Despite the economy being in a tailspin there is a lot happening with smartphones right now. The G1 Android is just one exciting development. I could have gone in many directions or waited but chose the G1 because I like the hardware and wanted to get into the software from the beginning. There will be more choices in a few months but I didn't see any reason to wait.

What are you looking for in a smartphone? Are you already on T-Mobile or thinking of moving to it? What other phones appeal to you?

These are my wish list for a smartphone:

1. ability to access my gmail personal account
2. ability to access my work email through microsoft exchange
3. threaded SMS
4. edit microsoft office documents
5. need a touch screen, wi-fi and 3G
6. download podcasts over the air
7. decent media player for watching movies
8. an FM radio client would be nice but not essential.

thanks

Exchange and Office are not supported but should be soon (there already is a partially working Exchange app). I think everything else is a go already.

The hardware is also high-quality on the G1. It may be hard to find a better-built phone. It's solid.

Umm, I don't have the same view as you for the G1. Spec wise I would agree it is good, but that is the smart phone standard now, nothing crazy or new. However, you get a plastic screen, and the device feels a little delicate in you hands. Blackberrys and the iPhone don't get me that same feeling. Also, after using a blackberry, treo, and the iphone I must say that the keyboard is lacking. It might as well be an onscreen keyboard because the keys are so low you can barley press them in. The storm's screen is more responsive. Other than that though I would say that it is a standard smart phone.

what does everyone think about the new rumors regarding a new G2 landing at the end of January. I have to say that the lack of a hardware keyboard would be a problem for me. i like all the various inputs on the G1 and would love to see them retained in a more attractive package.

thanks

1. Great access to g-mail accounts and push works fine
2. is push vs pull a big deal for you because you might have to pull work e-mails from the sky
3. coming from a blackberry where the threading is a joke the G1 threading is awesome, and i'd imagine its just awesome in general
5. check, check, and unless u have at&t and want a G1 so bad u unlock one(like me), Check
6. check
7. battery life is a serious issue with the G1 so keep that in mind. as far as the app itself look into 3rd party apps

the chin isn't as bad as people make it out to be and i believe with practice ill be able to type on it just as fast as i could my blackberry (only got the G1 a few days ago) unless ur trying to type while charging which is quite a feat.

It's not that I dislike the chin, there is only one grip that I have with it. After using the G1 that chin is noticeably much warmer than the rest of the phone.

Did you get the device fixed? Hopefully Samsung can help with repair or replacement.
