Considering rooting my SGS2. Not sure...

I have a T989D from Telus which is the same as the T mobile phone. It is currently running ICS version 4.0.3 and is performing reasonably well but I am considering rooting to maximize the device. I am currently running Go launcher with a few other customer launcher Widgets so i wanted these things to still be available and working. I love tinkering with my phone so I am thinking rooting could be for me. I am not a complete noob but I have a couple of questions and am hoping the amazing AC community can help me.

1. What are the biggest benefits you saw after rooting ie: speed, battery life etc.

2. Were there issues with apps and or phone features not working after rooting? I keep reading about camera not working properly on certain ROMs etc. So I am not looking for a hassle factor if this is what rooting can cause.

3. What ROMs do you suggest as being the best? I know this is subjective but I need a solid daily driver.

4. Is the AOKP jellybean ROM worth trying or are there still issues?

5. What are the negatives of rooting? Other than warranty. A friend of mine rooted his Desire HD and he didn't seem happy. He has issues with CM9 (I think) and wasn't really happy with the phone afterwards.

Pros and cons is what I'm looking for. Thanks for any help you can provide.

1) I didn't notice any speed or battery life differences from rooting. I did however manage to freeze and uninstall some carrier bloatware to regain space.

2) Rooting doesn't cause camera issues, different ROMs might.

3) I've been very happy with Jedi Mind Trick, but I have only been running it for approximately a week.

4) What I have read about jellybean ROMs is they all have an issue or two (camera is a big one for me).

5) I don't really think rooting is a negative as long as you pay attention to what you are doing. Sure you could install a malicious program and grant it root status, but that would be two mistakes you would need to make.

Bonus: Read-Read-ReRead Most of the details are out there for each ROM, it just takes some reading and digesting.
Bonus2: Backup your items

I'm running the latest AOKP JB rom, build 5. Runs great, camera and everything. Like the last guy said, you must do research and read, read, read. Also you have to wipe data. Look into Darkside superwipe and Darkside cache wipe, they prep the phone for your new rom.

Okay but can titanium backup work to restore things after?

Restoring app data is usually a bad thing with ROMs.

Oh okay. I thought this was the magic of titanium backup. I will need to look at my options. Thanks.

No, no, no. That IS the magic of Titanium Backup. You can reset all your apps and data. After flashing a rom I only restore my "user" apps. Because new roms have new system apps.

I was on 4.0.3 rooted on my t989 for a while and had no problems. Till a couple days ago the Jedi Knight 4 rom came out and it's extremely fast. Would highly recommend.

I'm running Jedi Mind Trick and I think the same guy maintains / creates it as Jedi Knight. I'm happy with it, even though it is still ICS.
