Hey all. I'm new to smartphone fandom. Trying to learn the jargon and such. Please excuse my ignorance.

I'm enticed by the Bionic and I have an upgrade I've been sitting on. However, I am very weary of buying another Motorola phone. My first Droid 2 constantly froze, lagged, reboot, etc. Eventually, the screen crapped out and my insurance replaced it. The new Droid 2 behaved exactly the same way. Not only that, but I have two friends who own Droid X's and they both experience tge same issues. My general conclusion drawn is that Motorola kinda makes crappy phones? Keep in mind, I'm a noob and I could be totally off.

My question is: can I expect the same from the Bionic? Are all Motorolas like this?

I eventually bought a Samsung Fascinate off ebay. It runs almost flawlessly.

Sorry for being so long-winded! I would love to hear your input. Thanks.

I can tell you I had no problems with the DX at all and now that my wife has it she has not had any problems. My brother bought the OG Droid on the release date. He has not had any problems to this day.. With the Bionic I am going to do what I did with the Droid X wait 2 weeks after the release to see if there is any real problems.

It seems you've had a bad experience, my friends and I have had nothing but good luck with our Motorola devices over the last few years...

That said, with Android devices its extremely important that you take the opportunity to get to know your phone because there are lots of tweaks to make it run faster, custom roms that are as stable or more stable than stock, and many generally interesting things you can do with these marvelous devices

I've had 2 Original droids and the first one I broke because I stepped on it. I never had a significant problem with them.

I have no problems with my Droid X, and had no isues with my OG Droid. My Xoom also runs great.

I have no problem with Moto... Except I've wated too long for my LTE upgrade on my Xoom...

Just about every phone model has it's quirks. The Bionic will be a totally different generation of phone. It may have entirely different issues, who knows. But no one will know yet without feedback from people who will actually own the phone. That's what you have to endure from buying a phone from day of release. If you are that worried wait a month after release and see what problems if any others are having. You possibly were just unlucky and got two bad phones in a row. My mother got a fascinate a few months ago and it was nearly impossible to get the screen to turn. You would hear it boot but no display. With the replacement the internal radio would not work. Third one was perfect ever since.

I'm by no means a "veteran" here in the forums, and honestly I'm still waiting for my August upgrade date to be able to get my first Android phone......that said, I've been eagerly awaiting the BIONIC since it was announced in January, but one of the reservations I've had personally is that it's from Motorola and the build quality. The only experience I've had with Motorola personally was NOT a smartphone - I had a RAZR way back when with VZW and I went through 3 of them......the first one locked up and I couldn't navigate anything on the phone. They replaced it under warranty since it was less than 12 months. The first replacement lasted about another 2-3 months before I started experiencing issues and then the 3rd was again about another 2-3 months. They finally replaced it with a different phone for me, but my only choice was a KRZR (another Moto product) and I seemed ok from what I remember, but I didn't have it all that long before I moved over to a Samsung WinMo phone. The Samsung hardware gave me problems too (at least I believe it was hardware, in that it didn't have enough memory to handle the WinMo OS efficiently) and VZW even quit carrying that model not long after they finally replaced it for me. I can't recall what the Samsung model was, but it was global candybar, BB-style phone w/ the QWERTY keyboard. They replaced that with the HTC Touch Pro2 I have currently (WinMo slider phone) and it's been ok, main issues with it I chalk up to WinMo being junk. I know I see a lot of comments from others in the forums that Moto actually makes really GOOD hardware in comparison to some of the others, so I'm hoping that my past experience was a bit of a fluke....

Little long winded myself, but it's my 2 cents (or maybe that was long enough to be 5 cents!!)

Actually the only reason I am jumping on this phone day 1 is the fact that it is a motorola. I have had nothing but good success with them. If it was from a different manufacturer I would probably wait a while to be sure.

Only Motorola Phone i have had is the Droid 1. The reliability on this phone is Excellent. Battery life is still on par with its age as i still get a full day with moderate/Heavy usage. Never had the phone replaced due to hardware or any other failure. Phones probably been dropped hard 6-8 times in the almost 2 years ive had it. Only minor wear on the frame, If i used a case there would be no wear at all. Never heard of any friends having issues with there Motos. From Razr to Droids i dont recall any having an issue the user didnt cause. I think it will be a pretty safe bet that the Bionic will be built well.

(I apologize if this shows up twice - the first one failed to send)

Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like I may have run into some lemons? Either way, I will wait until after it's released before I jump on it. I definitely would like to read people's opinions before I purchase.

Its just like any other device, we won't really know until it comes out and gets in people's hands. Most any new phone has some issues and quirks when it first comes out that can be addressed in future updates, and there is always some percentage of devices with hardware issues. How long the software issues will take to get worked out, and whether they matter to you or not are unknown until after launch. Considering the myriad problems Moto had with the previous attempt at the Bionic, and the supposed issues this has had in the months leading up to release, I'd certainly be wary. Yet considering how long its been in development and how much of Moto's reputation is riding on it, it had better be flawless.

If you're sure you would rather have the Bionic than anything else Verizon carries, you may as well go ahead and grab it. You have two weeks to take it back if you don't like it, or can't deal with a certain issue it has. If it has a hardware flaw, you'll be covered under warranty. But if you haven't completely made your mind up yet, or wouldn't mind waiting a bit longer if the Bionic doesn't turn out how you had hoped, you may want to wait a bit. That's what I did with the Charge, I wanted to wait a bit and see how people liked it, if there were any issues, and let its development progress, as I still wasn't completely sold on it. I waited and found a way to get it for half price on Memorial Day, and have been happy with it ever since.

You may not want to wait very long, and I wouldn't expect it to go on sale anytime soon, so again you should plan on buying it not long after it comes out if you know you want it. But I'd advise waiting a few days, and I certainly wouldn't pre-order it, no sense in buying a phone you haven't even had a chance to play with first.
