Contact Color Code Confusion . . .

I can't figure out for the life of me what the code codes are for contacts.

For example, two people who I know are in my google contacts have different color codes in the phone dialer | contacts.

Eventually, I figured out that some of the "duplicate" contacts were from google's "other contacts" which is basically "recently used" in gmail. I purged them, but I'm still confused.

Though gmail is my master contact source, if I go into settings I have facebook, dropbox, and touchdown (exchange client) listed, though I'm not intentionally syncing facebook contacts.

Any ideas?
