Contact names disappeared on Galaxy 7s but only in phone and text options

[Android Central Question]

On my Galaxy 7s contact names have disappeared on the majority of my contacts but only when accessing the phone and text options, this has effected new and old contacts.
However the contact details are still all visible when accessing, contacts , what's app and email options . when people call, the contact names still appear on screen and still appear in recent?
Normally I wouldn't mind but can't see who has text me and if I want to make a call I can no longer do this via the phone option I have to access contacts.
I am concerned this is a virus or part of the phone is failing.

Welcome to Android Central! Go to Settings>Apps​, select Phone, tap Permissions, and make sure it has permission to access Contacts.

I have a similar problem. The permissions are set correctly. Also, my contacts list shows only 40 of my contacts. So, it looks like the last update deleted most of my contacts.

Welcome to Android Central! Are the contacts from your Google account, Samsung account, an Exchange account, or only locally saved to the Phone account?
