Question Contacts Profile Pictures

I want to change all the pictures that the Google Contacts app uses.

I removed all the profile pictures & have my own I want to use, but can anyone tell me what size (in pixels) I should use to have the pictures fit just right?

I don't think it matters what size the pics are -- when you choose an image to be a profile pic, it'll show up full size, but the profile pic can only be a square or circle, so you'll need to adjust the framing of the pic to match that area.

Obviously, if you choose a really small low-res pic (like a thumbnail), it will tend to look blurry or pixelated on the phone (especially if it's magnified).

The pictures I tried using are 500x500, but they get badly cropped &, although I can zoom-in the picture, I can't zoom-out.

I'll play w/the pictures sizes today a bit to get a better fit.

I usually resize mine between 200×200 to 250x250.

I've tried 500x500, 200x200 & 100x100; strangely they all look they same once I add them to Contacts.
I've left the pictures I use at 500x500.

On a slightly related point, how do I stop Google from changing my custom-used pictures?
Sometimes a few of them get automatically changed.
