Contract Up, Purchasing A Non-Contract Phone Question

My trusty Thunderbolt has served me well, having a large aftermarket battery, being rooted and now running Liquid's ICS. But, it is time to move on. I don't want to give up my coveted unlimited data plan, and Verizon insists that I do to get a new phone. I'd like to keep as much money out of there hands if possible. I'm looking at either the Samsung Galaxy III or the Note II. Can I purchase these from other venues other than Verizon and move them to my account? I have no idea where to even look for these and the thought of plunking down $600-700 to Verizon gives me serious heartburn. I just don't want to purchase a phone that isn't compatible with Verizon's network and then be stuck with an expensive, WiFi mini-tablet that can't work on Verizon's network.

Thanks.

Give eBay a look. I've gotten plenty of phones that work just fine from there. Just make sure that the ESN is clean and you're good to go. Verizon will activate it as long as they have the phone in their system.

You can buy them just about anywhere, just make sure it is for Verizon.

Best Buy, eBay, Amazon, Wirefly, swappa, the AC central Marketplace....heck wal-mart. Activating it on your account should be as simple as taking your sim out of the TB and putting it in the new phone.

Just looking on eBay a little bit ago, you can get an SGS3 for about 500ish. You can get a gnex for under 150. Keep in mind though, if you go through eBay you will not enjoy any warranty protection (outside of manufacturer). Make sure if you do buy used, you get one with a clean ESN

I wouldn't get it from eBay.. Go to best buy or heck Costco has good deals, plus warranty and Costco has a 90 day return policy
