Converting Video for HTC Evo

I was just about to convert a DVD for mobile watching.
Been using MP4 for awhile going back to my TP. Resolution and bit-rate got higher when I went to the Pre. The TP wouldn't be able to handle those.

So I figure I might as well encode this for the Evo4G.
Playing around in HandBrake it looks like the Evo should be able to play the file at close to DVD quality.

I'm trying "Normal" with "Strict" anamorphic, (looks like resolution will be 720x464), H.264, of course, with 65% constant quality, Can't really play with the bit-rate until I get an Evo4G, AAC audio, don't suppose it'll do AC3, bit-rate: 160 with Dolby mixdown. Also using chapter markers as it didn't effect the Pre any.

Anybody else give thought yet as to what settings they'll use for encoding video?

I'm interested in this as well, I've converted several movies for my iPod Touch but I'd like to get higher quality out of the ones I convert for the Evo.

They really need to bring .avi files into the evo it would be very easy to move files and no convertion...

OK. Stripes Extended Cut. Approx 2hours came out to a whopping 2.6G with those settings.
I've been keeping 2-3 movies on my phone at a time so that's not going to cut it.
Playing with the bit-rate is going to be a necessity for sure. Not sure what the final bit-rate worked out to. I'll have to check after work, I don't know how to do it easily in Linux.
Paste experience trying to increase my resolution up to 640 I needed well over 1.2mbs to keep pixelation down and it still wasn't acceptable.

The converted DVD sure looks nice on the computer though.

I agree though, you could try the target-size. A 1.5GB file would be more manageable and still have good quality on a mobile.

Bitrate is file size (in bits) divided by video length (in seconds). 2.6GB=2.6*1000*1000*1000 bytes (or 2.6*1024*1024*1024 depending on whether it is gigabyte or gibibyte) = 2.6*1000*1000*1000*8 bits = 20,800,000,000 bits. 2 hours = 2*60*60 seconds = 7,200 seconds. So, the bitrate is 20,800,000,000 / 7,200 = 2,888,889 bits per second or about 2.9Mbps.

your calculation, while techncially correct, assumes the source is a mono audio source, or a monochromatic video source..not the case with a DVD

Why does Linux have to be so hard?!

I can't figure out how to find the bitrate. Simply watching the statistics in VLC the Max I've noticed is 3500 and the lowest was 1300.

I'm honestly fine with those settings given I'd only put a few movies on the Evo at a time anyway. I'm interested how playback will fair with the large file sizes.

Question, after you have your mp4 files is there a way to add cover art to the meta data? Similar to what iTunes does for the iPhone.

Used an online calculator and worked backwards. Bit-rate is 2748kBs.
Be interesting it it could play that high a bit-rate but I wouldn't count on it.

good question. It appears that would be correct. Guess in 4 weeks welll find what the "best" bit-rate is.

Maybe browse the Incredible forum. I'd imagine playback would be similar.

yes. you are setting a quality level..which will have a max bitrate under total scene change.. and while not an expert on these specific coding schemes, many compression algorithms update the changes to the pixels vs a total refresh.. so if it was a black cat in a coal cellar then your bit rate would be very low, even at a higher quality setting.

So the quality setting is the way to go.. start from poor and work up the quality setting until you get an acceptable picture (in my case i can just take my glasses off..lol).. and clearly if you are not planning on viewing the movie via hdmi out then you can get away with a lower quality setting..(given the screen is 4.3" not 42")

in this way you will maximise the filesize efficiency..ie not all 2hr movies will be the same size at the same quality setting... hope this helps

Did some more playing with a classic. 48Hours. I originally used THIS GUIDE since it seemed reasonable.
File size for the 96 minute movie came out to 1.1gb. Problem is that the video was "fuzzy".
Kind of hard to explain, it just wasn't clear. To test out that it was the settings I used my preset, (attached).
It's somewhat clearer, this is an old movie, and the file size is the same.

I did a lot of test encoding lastnight and today and honestly there's a marginal amount of detail that can be picked up but almost any of the recommended settings I've seen will be almost indistinguishable in quality and file size. Encoding time will be similar as well, except as noted below.

The big surprise for me is that encoding with FFmpeg is up to 5x faster than H.264.
I will use that from now on for my DL'd torrents.

Digital copies of movies onto evo

I have all these digital copies from bluray movies that i bought and i want to put some on my evo. Ive tried double twist and cant get it to work.. it worked for my music but not movies. does anyone know a good solution
