Copy Movie to SGS3 and What Format?

I just tried to transfer some music and a ripped DVD in MP4 format to the S3 from my WIndows 7 PC via USB connection. Most of the music copied OK but some MP3s gave an Copy File error saying "Cannot copy.... The device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected." I was able to try again and the copy completed.

When I tried the MP4 file it wanted to convert the file to another format before copying but it did not state what format. It estimated an hour to do this. The only other option was to stop the copy. I waiting quite a while before I gave up on the transfer. (The MP4 file was 720 X 540 resolution with audio shown as AAC 2 channel adn Dolby Pro Logic II and a 160 bitrate.) I tried to do a straight copy of the MP4 file and got the same error as above.

I then tried a smaller MP4 file and it copied and played OK but the screen brightness started out bright but switched to darker (but still visible) and stayed there. After the video finished the brightness went up again.

Anyone know what is going on here?

If you download something like VLC Player (VideoLAN - VLC media player for Android) you should be able to watch any format conceivable (at least if it's anything like VLC for Ubuntu/Mac/etc.)

The problem is not watching or listening, it is getting them on the phone.

Seems I had the best luck attaching the videos to my SD card in a folder and playing them with MX player. VLC really is awesome too, just keep trying things and something will work out. By playing around you'll teach yourself lots of stuff about your phone you wouldn't learn otherwise

I've thrown every file I can think of at the stock video player and its only had problems with .vob
. When transfering the file over it asks me to convert it , but I just ignore that and copy it over. x264 , mkv , avi , xvid everything else played fine as were.

Walter,

....download MX Player from the Android Play Store and see if it will play your file. It plays almost every codecs out there! If not, you're going to have to re-encode to a familiar codec in order for your phone to play it.

I connected the phone to my WIn7 computer and autoplay asked if I wanted to browse files using Explorer. I said yes. I then dragged and dropped the files from the computer to the phone. Most copied just fine but others did not giving the message I quoted above.



I appreciate all the help but please read the question carefully before responding. I am not having a problem playing videos. All files that copied played normally. I am simply trying to figure our how to correctly transfer files to the phone.

Hi Walter I am having the same issue. I can't copy from my pc to the sd card. It says the system is not large enough. However this was a mkv file but it let me copy the mp4 no problem. So I have taken the card out of the phone and inserted into my pc and tried to copy straight from my hard drive onto sd card and still get the same error. Is there a way to change from mtp?

I have read the question and understand your dilemma which is why I have been asking the questions I have. Your problem might be the fact that you did not use MTP to transfer your files. It is the new standard for transfering files in ICS. I have included a link on MTP below that details what it is and how to use.

Ricky, that remark was not targeted at you as your comment was helpful. It was directed to several other posters are telling me to install this or that app to view videos. That is why I seperated it several lines below my response to you. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

This article implies that you connect via the USB cable to the PC. When I first did this there was some background installation of a driver but once that completed, I was only offered to use the Windows Explorer to transfer files and that is what I did. There was no place to "choose MTP as the connection type" in either the phone or computer.

Should I be doing something different?

I got that pop up last night when I moved a mp4 file over. I closed it out and rec-copied the movie and it went fine. Full 720p movie, which looks great Btw.

I plan on copying some more over tonight and will post back with my results.

Hello Walter - Bear with me as I do not have my SIII yet (Verizon). In Vista MTP is part of the "Windows Media" framework, I am not sure if that is the case with Windows 7? It appears that "Windows Media Player" is utilized to transfer files, which would indicate to me that upon connecting your phone to the PC you would select "Transfer Files using Windows Media Player". I am sure I will be running into the same problem once I receive my phone. I however am on XP Windows, Support for Media Transfer Protocol in Windows XP requires the installation of Windows Media Player 10 or higher.

My suggestion:

See if Windows 7 supports MTP. If not then you might need to update to media player 10 as in XP.
Use "Transfer Files using Windows Media Player.

I know this is frustrating, but I am sure there is a solution. Maybe others will chime in.
