copying image files to my N7 and viewing them in Gallery

I've been downloading photos to my Nexus 7 and placing them in folders like:

Storage/emulated/0/pictures/my images/

I noticed when viewing in my file manager app, that these folders (with files) seem to get copied/emulated in a 'root' folder:

(Root) /storage/emulated/Legacy/pictures/my images/

Two questions about this:

  • I wonder, are these files and folders being copied by my device, so they're taking up more storage space, or are these 'legacy' folders only virtual? and only look like they've been duplicated?

  • And, when I go to view my images in the Gallery app supplied with the N7, it sometimes shows both 'versions' of the folder(s) and files (including the 'legacy version in the 'root' directory), and sometimes it only shows one version--the one I created. I can't tell why it's doing these two different things (or what I'm doing to make it happen or not happen). And to remove this duplicate folder from the Gallery view, I have to temporarily copy over the files to another folder, delete the folders they were in and recreate a folder to copy the images back to--sort of a pain really. So, is there a way to not have this happen in the first place?

Thanks David.

its not a duplicate, its called symlink which is same as shortcut folders on windows. you are not loosing any space.
They are doing this to enable multiuser on N7.

next time you copy files do it on root/sdcard/pictures thats the actual location. the rest are just shortcuts

Okay, good to know that it's not taking up more storage on my device.

So, I guess I've been placing the folders in the wrong location (and I assume the same is true for music, ebooks, PDF files, etc that I bring over.) I need to place my image files in:

(root) /sdcard -> /storage/emulated/Legacy/PIctures/my images folder/ (and same for the other file types I mentioned above, but instead of it being Pictures, it would be Music or Ebooks, or, etc.)

And not in:
(sdcard) Storage/emulated/0/pictures/my images/ OR
(Root) /storage/emulated/Legacy/pictures/my images/

I hope that clears up the issue of their being two of the same folders (with images) showing up in the Gallery. I'll give it a try.

Best, David.
