I used to have a Nexus 7 tablet, but after 3 years it died. I can charge it all I want, but it will not boot up. This past year when it was working, it was awful: Took 6 minutes to get up to speed and still would choke at the lightest of apps. It’s battery life also suffered. I’d use it just playing bingo for 15 to 20 minutes per day for example and would have to charge it every other day.
I recently learned the average life of a tablet is 3 years, so with that knowledge, I do not want to spend as much money as I did on my Nexus, which was $230 three years ago when I bought it.
My tablet use is limited or sparse. I mainly got my Nexus to use as a remote because my eye sight is poor and I cannot see buttons on standard remotes. I was using my Nexus to control my Roku mainly (wonderful for that) and my AVR, etc.
I want to get some light bulbs and switches, etc. that Alexa (Echo Dot) can have fun controlling and I would like to be able to make my Roku and such easier to use again, so since I will never own a smart phone I have decided against my better judgement that it is time for a new tablet. I am finding that in order to have the Echo use these things an Android or iOS tablet or phone is required initially at least.
So here is what I will be using a tablet for:
Setting up smart devices for user with the Echo
Remote for Roku etc.
I do not watch movies and such on tablets or phones and I do not play big games on them, so I don’t need anything strictly geared towards that.
I do want something fast, long battery life, pure Android so I can use Google store apps (a must for smart devices), the latest Android OS or at least upgradable to it and WiFi only of course. I would like a bigger screen than my Nexus too, say something in the at least 8 to 10 inch range.
I am looking at the following tablets:
Asus Zenpad 10 (Z300M)
Asus Zenpad 8.0 (Z380M)
Asus Zenpad S 8.0 (Z580C)
Is there any one of those that are best value for me or if there are other suggestions, let me know.
