Cracked iPhone screen, interested in trying Android

I managed to crack the screen on my iPhone 4 while in the ER (long story). I have the option of repairing my current phone, or purchasing a new one. I'm tempted to jump ship, because of things like not being able to define different profiles depending on charging status (ie: only emergency calls make noise while phone is charging and I'm sleeping) and other such locked-down functionality with iOS. I'm also a primary Linux user at home and work, so Android is interesting for other reasons.

That said, I'm hearing ics/4.x is what I want as an OS. With that in mind, is there a current phone out on the market that you'd suggest? If not out right now, one coming out soon? My current phone is usable, and I can probably wait a month or at most two for a new phone. I'd prefer not, but like most things, it appears the Android ecosystem is rapidly changing - and the ics-based phones are starting to appear aroud now.

I appreciate any information you can provide me, even if it's just some phone models to keep an eye out. I am not adverse to rooting/flashing custom ROMs - I'd in fact like to move towards as stock of an image as possible, I generally don't like vendor customizations on things that prevent me from tracking the upstream progress. I would prefer to not purchase a phone I'm reliant on the manufacturer to provide updates for.

Well if you want the major hacking support go for the gnex (pretty sure its on ATT)
Or maybe a galazy s III
Sent from my BAMF'd Thunderbolt

I'm in somewhat of a similar boat though the screen on my iPhone is not cracked.

HTC released the Andriod 4.0 update recently for the Vivid (which you can get on Amazon for $.01 no tax or shipping). The update for the Samsung GS2 Skyrocket is coming out very soon too, and the HD version of the Skyrocket is supposed to be released this weekend. And then there's the G Note which is far more than just a phone but also pretty large and as you probably know, includes a stylus which may or may not be useful to you.

Personally I'm going to wait to see the GS2 Skyrocket HD and see if it's THAT much different than the current model, which Amazon has for $99. The Vivid is VERY tempting for a penny, though most of the reviews say it doesn't perform as well as the Skyrocket but has a nice screen and better build quality. If I were you I'd go to the ATT store and play with all 4 (assuming they get the SR HD soon).

Thank you for the advice, I'll wait for reviews on the Skyrocket and go visit a store once they have them in stock. I know the HTC One X is due out within a month or so, and the Samsung Galaxy S3 is more summer-bound, so I'm leaning towards something before that phone comes out, or I'll be playing the perpetual waiting game and deal with a cracked screen until then.

I imagine you saw the review of the new Nokia Lumina 900? And I understand this is a Windows phone rather than Android, but I have to admit that it's very cool looking and the UI looks sweet. What I have read though is that in earlier phones the Windows 7 OS cannot do actually multitasking like iOS or Android, which isn't good. But it's EXTREMELY fast and user friendly UI. I guess the bad news is the camera lacks a back light sensor which means low light pics will suck. But at $100 I think it may be pretty popular and worth looking at.

Trter 10-2. You DO realize the One X camera sticks out and the lens will likely get scratched quickly, and that the battery is only 1600 mAh, and also that there's no micsoSD or ability to replace the battery, right?

You should still get it fixed and use it as an iPod Touch or jailbreak and tinker. I do that & give to my kids to play games.

I'm using the gs3 and love it.
