Just needed to vent.. thought I'd post on here to see if anyone has any advice as to what I should do. I literally walked into my local AT&T store 2 months ago to the day and plunked down my money for a shiny new HTC One. After being away from the Android platform for a couple of years (former Droid, X, X2 and Thunderbolt owner) is was excited to get away from the iPhone that I had and come home.

For some reason when I bought this phone I did something that I've NEVER done in my life... I bought a case. I realized that I was making a 2 year commitment to this phone and thought it would be best to protect my investment.. so naturally I bought an Otter Box. It actually killed me to put this beauty in a case that hid its sexiness and made it feel like a brick in my hand, but hey.. better safe than sorry eh?

Flash forward to today...I'm still as smitten with this phone as the day I bought it. I get myself ready for work, check a couple of emails on my phone and put the phone in my pocket, get in my car and start my 1 hour journey to work. Now mind you... I have a self-imposed rule. My right front pocket is dedicated to my phone. NOTHING and I mean NOTHING is ever allowed to be in that pocket with my phone... no keys, change etc... that space has ALWAYS been reserved as a safe-haven for my phones to prevent anything from happening to them.

Imagine my surprise when i get to work and take my phone out of my pocket and find the screen cracked and spidering all the way across. I immediately think through my drive... nothing of any detail that I can think of that would explain this. I run out to my car to make sure that I didn't total it on the way in.... Nope... car is just fine. Of course.. my next step is the most logical step that I would expect anyone to make in this situation. I ran to the mens room at work, did the 'under the stall peek' for feet to make sure that nobody else was in there. Once I had cleared the mens room I locked the door behind me. The only logical next step was to strip down to my skivvies, climb up on the counter and scrutinize every pore on my body for any sign of blemish, bump, bruise, laceration or fracture to make sure that I didn't accidentally fall out of my car on my way to work. Nope... no sign of outward injury there either.

So now I'm left with the fact that my screen cracked in my pocket.

In an Otter Box.

While I'm sitting down.

For an Hour.

I use a side belt clip so I know i dont but do people actually sit in a car for an hour and leave there phones in there pocket??
not doubting you OP just find that strange...

Really? After all that you find that someone keeping their phone in their pocket for an hour is the strange part? LOL Wow............

The screen likely shattered because you were putting stress on the screen for that entire hour. Unless your pockets are really loose when sitting like that. I know that my jean pockets don't work well when driving. They crush my wallet. So, I always empty my pockets before driving.

Yeah I'm thinking that may be the case.... Especially with the extra girth the Otter Box gives it.

One of the things I like about my ONE is that it fits snugly in a console drink holder so I don't have to keep it in my pocket. Phablets are too big to sit anywhere safely in my car. I use a case/holster combo and find it very easy to pop the ONE out of the holster when I get in the car. I also use a vent mount for when I need Google Nav access which keeps the phone cool and out of direct sunlight.

I keep my phone in my pocket all the time... Hours at a time.

That REALLY sucks.

I keep my HTC ONE which is protected in a Diztronic matte black flexible TPU case always in my left pocket with nothing else in it. I do this all day long and have not had any issues (knock on wood).

Which Otterbox case did you have? I did try the Otterbox Defender for about a week. That thing is just such a beast and so well padded, I can't imagine anything breaking the phone inside that other than possible dirt and particles getting underneath the plastic screen protector.

Exactly my thoughts!

Thanks for the reply. It is indeed an Otter Box Defender...... That is why I'm blown at away at this happening. I went to the AT&T store today just to see what they would say. They told me the only thing they could recommend was to try to find a local shop that repairs glass. The look on my face must have been priceless.

The stress of how the phone was in your pocket with the bulk of the otter box might have done it.

Say it shifted to the side of your thigh , now this bulk is stressing the phone almost in a twist fashion.

My thought on it . Since it's only 2 months old, warranty it

Would love to...except that I opted to NOT get the monthly insurance with this phone..... I never have done that in the past.. I've NEVER had a phone break for any reason (and believe me I've had my share of drops). I've been to the store, talked to AT&T on the phone and spoken to HTC. I've been basically told to kick rocks by all of them.

I've heard rumors that otterbox would help in situations like this but it's not true. I've heard of people buying insurance after the fact and then making a claim.

Otterbox only warranties the case.... No hardware coverage. I know people that do that warranty after the fact stuff.... I just can bring myself to do that... I'm too honest. Looks like I'm just going to have to suck it up. Too bad too...... I really love this phone.

I appreciate your honesty. You make things better for all of us. I am sorry for your loss. At least you didn't total your car or hurt yourself...
